Many knowledgeable people disagree. And then there’s Sweden. Which is actually doing well.

We could do the same, and have the athletes sign a waiver stating they would not sue the school if they should come down with the virus. Only those who really wish to play should come out, and those who don't can stay home.We should not be in the business of asking kids 18-22 years old to sign waivers excluding the University from liability and culpability in this fight against Covid-19 and trying to play football so a bunch of adults sitting in their homes quarantining have something to watch on TV. Just my opinion. Any waiver being "waived" in front of these young men should immediately be retracted and put in the paper shredder. These kids do not need to be potentially jeopardized in these trying times as this isn't there profession such as the adults in the major sports at the pro level. Again, just my opinion. You do understand that signing such a waiver works in New Zealand but not in the USA and especially not in California, right? In any scenario where the adults (the University) is making money off of 18-22 year olds and we put waivers in front of them absolving the "money maker" of any responsibility isn't just in my opinion. I don't care where in the world this is happening. Too much influence by the adults over the kids to sign whether overt or passive. The amount of peer pressure they could/would instigate in the kids would be too much. My issue with your statement is you point to countries for examples while I point to actual kids being influenced by the money makers who are looking out for, surprisingly, their own monetary interests.

Which is actually doing well. You cant compare the US to Sweden. They have national healthcare, national sick days. Americans goto work sick cause they get no time off, they cant afford to goto the doctor so they dont get tested. Our government doesnt do national mandates. Its just a terrible comparison

Regarding Sweden, their death rate is 11X higher than their neighbors Finland and Norway. Different part of the world. There is no comparison.

Whatever shall we do without spectator sports. Oh, heavens to betsy, let's risk it all so the lives of couch potatoes have meaning. Try this: go for a walk. Talk to a human on the phone, over the fence. Do some chores. Get a hobby (your own, not watching someone else). Live your own life rather than vampirically living the lives of others~ while putting the lives of others at risk. In short: Get. A. Life. So others don't need to lose theirs.

You think people actually are advocating for sports cuz they are dying to sit on their couch and watch football? You think people are that stupid?
Parents want their kids to play sports. The kids want to play sports. Nobody has a gun to their heads, these kids want to play and there are very sound arguments for why it'd be even safer for them to play and be under the supervision & healthcare of the team/league than to not play and get into who knows what.
I haven't spent a single afternoon on my couch watching any of the sports that have been going on, yet I'm a huge advocate for getting them to play. People's futures are being greatly affected by the short sighted/political decision to not play. And for those who don't have a professional future, life is about moments and memories and all that is being stripped away from them over something that is not based on facts or science. You don't get this time back. A healthy 20 year old is at WAY more risk driving to practice than they are dying (or even being hospitalized) from the coronavirus

A disrespectful take? Oh, puhleeze, Charlotte. The reason this is being pursued by the Big Ten, why it's the deal in the SEC or the ACC, has nothing to do with what the kids want. It has to do with the money. That's it. That's all. As to the health concerns, this is not about the 20 year old exclusively, it's about society as a whole. What is disrespectful is putting sports above human life.

What is disrespectful is putting sports above human life. How is it putting anyone else at risk? The players are tested multiple times a week, which they wouldn't be if they weren't playing. If someone gets it, they get quarantined and make sure they can't spread it to others. What do you think these players are going to be doing if they don't play? Sit on their thumbs by themselves in their apartments? They have common sense and realize the virus is of virtually no risk to them (and the VAST majority of people), so they're going to party. Which is exactly what has been happening. Partying while never being tested is going to spread the virus way more than playing and being under strict guidelines would

Since roughly half of those who died from...ahem...or with Covid were already in nursing homes, I wonder how many of those people would have made it to the end of 2020 despite Covid?
If you know what it means to put someone in a nursing home, you know there's an In Door, but rarely an Out Door, and the time tables are typically very short.
I say this with respect to those who died, but also with the mindset that at some point society and the economy needs to move forward.

Actually, wakelunch, his post was classy in that it was thoughtful and personal. Yours, on the contrary, comes off as angry and uninformed. As of today, the vaccine is promised to be available in late Oct. 700 million doses to be avail by end of March. That’s both a cure and a plan. If you’re politically poisoned , of course, you then may be the one who’s clueless. Your choice.

Backed by his team of health professionals. But you’re clearly poisoned by Trump hate. So, I’m not , by definition , “making it up “ as it’s publicly released what they intend to do. Hope you understand the difference between past , present and future tense.
