The pitch that Seager laid off of to get the base hit was 99.1 on the outside corner. It literally missed by an inch, but could have been called a strike easily. Pederson I can't explain. Had him down 0-2 and then made the 1-2 mistake pitch into his swing path. But Patiño's platoon splits heavily favor right handed hitters. Three of the first four he faced were....left handed hitters, including Bellinger and Seager. Been wondering this season so far why Padre relief pitchers have been inserted to face hitters that hit from the opposite side. Isn’t it usually the norm that lefties come in to face lefties and righties, righties? That doesn’t seem to have been happening consistently so far, am I right. it comes done to the fact that the manager has no limited in game decision making ability. he is reading from a menu created weeks ago, revised that morning for a game that day. Did you ever play Stratomatic as a kid? or did you just watch someone else play it? this is what its like watching someone else play it i like the Padres as much as i like the players on my fantasy team. they are disposable heroes, numbers and nothing more.

Setting players up to succeed is paramount in this organization for it to be a winning franchise. Then maybe they should have signed a manager who wouldn't have done that. That's more than just the manager, unfortunately. Organizational development is a hierarchy. I'm thrilled for Luis, but I think their process was flawed. Possible he starts next week.

Patino out there was not an accident, it was scripted. his appearance that night in that inning was pre-ordained the moment he was called up. is this not true? or do you really think it was down to Tingler at that moment, sure close game lets give the kid a shot? this is not some journeyman waiver wire pickup, this is one of the top prospects in the organization, his every waking moment is pre-planned for him.

I actually cover the team, so saying that Tingler has no in-game decision making ability is just patently false. Regarding Patińo, they were looking for a spot in game 1 and it didn't materialize due to the situation and score. Rather than have him sit on the bench through the off day, they put him out there. That wasn't the "plan" when he was called up other than the bullpen role, which was already discussed. They likely will start him next week in the #4 spot, to go through hopefully 3 or 4 innings. The Padres have an entire department dedicated to modeling/analytics and there is a lot of input throughout the organization when it comes to the USD site/callups. They have a half dozen plus coaches and staff over at Fowler Park.

I had previously asked whether Tingler made in-game decisions that could be considered outside the game plan. and i think this example you provided would seem to answer that. although someone could also argue that throwing him out there rather than letting him sit out the series and the day off, would indeed be something that was to be scripted for that day? In the end though, I had zero issues with throwing Patino out there, and i thought the experience was good for him in the long run. I've had very few complaints with how the club is run, outside the use of the bullpen.

Tingler even referenced that they were looking for a softer spot for Patiño to debut situationally, but just felt like game flow and circumstance allowed for him to used when he was. They are heavily playing matchups in the early going, especially with guys like Tim Hill and Pierce Johnson. Tingler has autonomy to make decisions, this isn't Andy Green anymore.

Perhaps he (or the C) were thinking Seager would be expecting him to waste one with a deuce off the plate or something and thought they could sneak a mid 90's nasty boy up his arse. That was a horrible decision to put him in there at that time against three lefties, especially for his confidence. He should have sat him and waited for a better situation. I'm sure he'll be fine, but for his debut to be against three lefties when he's better against right handed batters was a bad decision. Tingler's bullpen decisions has me scratching my head at times.

Luis will be fine. He's a tough kid and bounced back just fine in that second inning. Tingler's bullpen usage, by and large, has been excellent. Guys just have to produce.

Ryan, just curious....you mentioned you cover the team. Who do you cover them for(I know, terrible English)? I contribute for MadFriars.com. Site was founded in 2003, pretty much the go-to for minor league coverage (it's prospect-oriented) so I have done exhausting levels of work with the minor league guys. I could probably write a book (sadly) on Patiño, Gore and others.
