Iâm disappointed with the Hedges, Mejia and Machado. Manny has had opportunities in several 9th inning games and he comes up flat every time. He has a zero WAR right now, his bat needs to wake up, especially in the late innings.
On the positive side, Tatis Jr. is absolutely legit. I would start hitting him 3rd or 4th so his HRs come with runners on base. It is good to see Myers and Grisham also contribute.

Yep - I'm feeling pretty smart early on about taking Tatis Jr 8th overall in one league and early second round in another.
This kid is something else.
Next season he'll be a top 3 pick in most leagues I guarantee it .

First player ever to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in 100 games. Goes back to 1900. Highest slugging percentage of any shortstop in history. Better overall numbers in his first 100 games than guys like Trout, Ted Williams and Alex Rodriguez. On pace to become one of the top 30 21 and under players of all time - Tied DiMaggio yesterday for career fWAR. Could surpass Hank Aaron and others before season's end.

Great piece. And more importantly for our purposes, he's bringing back joy to being a Padre fan, something I haven't felt in a decade.

Going to throw a bit of cool water on this. In 2017, Tatis Jr played 131 games in the affiliated minor leagues. In 2018, he played 88 games. Last year, he played 84 games.
While he has the beginnings of a stellar career in the big leagues, I am just a bit concerned about his durability. He hurt his thumb sliding into 2nd base in 2018 (should no longer be a problem as he now wears an "oven mitt" protector while running the bases. He wasn't that night in 2018), and hurt his back last year, causing him to miss most of the 2nd half of the season. Back issues really scare me.
With all of that said, I hope Tatis Jr stays healthy, and plays here for many years. He is the most talented SS the Padres have ever had, IMO

Hopefully that also translates to not doing things like splits that would make even the Nicholas Brothers cringe.

And this isn't news to the organization, they have medical reports on top of medical reports. They'll likely wait to see if he can stay healthy through this season and then discuss an extension in earnest. There is no real rush.

I just want him to stay healthy since he is so much fun to watch. If he can stay healthy, it's going to be good times at the SS position for years here.

Think the whole thing is really overblown. But I'm glad the team can wait. Fernando's making less than 250K this season. What a bargain.
