For a good long time, this was my favorite sports day ever in San Diego. My Dodgers were in town for a big game against the Padres (sorry lifetime locals), and the Sooners were in town to play the Aztecs. All I had to do was make my way down from my apartment right above the stadium for a 2-for.
Problem was... They had to figure out whether both games could actually be played in one day. SDSU agreed to move the kickoff back to after 8 pm. Problem solved. Still, a lingering doubt... Would the baseball game go extra frames, and the college football game end up with a midnight kickoff? (Note: Somewhere, there is a time-lapse of the field and stands changing configurations.)
The Padres had a really amazing season that year with a penchant for bottom-of-the-ninth wins. Can't tell you how many times post-game victory fireworks went off outside my kitchen window. Dodgers were trying keep pace, and the playoffs loomed large out the front window. It was a blazing-hot day with a mid-day first pitch. Even though the crowd was massive, I ignored my assigned seat and sought shade. The Dodgers put up a touchdown and extra point in the top of the 5th, and that ended any suspense re kickoff times.
But the real scoring explosives were saved for that night. The Aztecs scored early and often, and aside from letting the Sooners back into it just before halftime, SDSU was never really threatened. Before our run of success in recent years against the P-5 (particularly the PAC12), this OU game was the one in which I could take at least some consolation.

Three thoughts:
1) I miss playmakers like Hakim. Wow!
2) I cant wait until we have a QB that was as fun as Blanton again.
3) I love how our D has gotten so much better this last decade. I hope we never have that bad of a D with really poor tackling and blown assignments like we did for so many years.
That was fun to watch again. Thank you!!

Fully agree with all three of your thoughts. Two more of my own... 1) That Oklahoma team was probably one of their worst in history, but we'll take the win anyway. 2) F the Dodgers!

That was a fun game. I remember some Sooner Fans sat behind us and were really shocked that we won

That was an awesome game. It was supposed to be a 12:30 kickoff on ABC. Our 96 team was loaded with some serious speed. I just watched the highlights of our Thursday night game vs Wyoming that year which never gets old. It’s a shame that 8-3 wasn’t good enough for a bowl back then. Would also have loved to see us play BYU in the WAC championship game that season.

He could run and put up some serious passing numbers.

That doesn't seem to be as much of an issue today for a QB who can move around.

Let’s bring back those helmets for one game. One of my all time favorites.

I hope we never have that bad of a D with really poor tackling and blown assignments like we did for so many years. That was fun to watch again. Thank you!! You better believe it was a fun game to watch and win! The year before (1995) we payed them in Norman, and Ricky Parker INT'D ,I think, 2 or 3 passes toward the end of the game for 146 yards which is still a school record. My cousin and I were there for the '96 offensive game in San Diego. Two observations to add to the above: A. Our defense was not able to stop OU's rush game as they totaled 308 rushing to our 187 even though we had George Jones. (Blanton passed for 258 & 5 TD's) B. Claude Gilbert was our DC at the time with Tom Craft as the OC. I learned later from a defender on that team that Gilbert was upset that Craft had our offense score so quickly. He said that he wanted Craft to call plays which would take a little more time off the clock. OU had no pass game and would usually take about 5 to 6 minutes or more to take the ball down field to score. Then we get the ball back and because of Blanton's passing we would score in just a minute or two. So, Gilbert was P.O. at Craft. But, he couldn't help it with a great QB, and Will Blackwell making catches. If, nothing else I believe we may have taught Oklahoma the value of having a good passing QB. Most of their great teams had a great rushing attack and defense, but they were not very well known for great QB's. They got one in 2000, and that's when they won a National Championship.

I ended up watching as many games from that season as I could find. It’s too bad Childs gave up football as he may have been our best receiver that year and three receivers from that team went pro. The big question is could we have beaten BYU in the WAC championship game that year? It would have been a hell of a game. I think Ricky Parker was injured late in the year so it would have been tough.
