First games are scheduled for just after January 1st.
All sports will try to be crammed basically into just over one semester. Good luck.

Im up in the Southern Section, I havent seen the outline schedule for San Diego Section yet. For us, football will be a tight squeeze but who will really get the shaft are two sport athletes in Winter/Spring sports. They are essentially being crammed into one season, with about 90% overlap.
I wonder if CIF will lift the 18 hour rule?

That's what I was thinking. How can an athlete who plays two major sports like football/basketball, or football/baseball ever play when games and schedules overlap? He might be better off just concentrating on one sport, and forgetting the other. All sports in the Spring season only is going to be a huge mess!

As of a few hours ago, the mess just got worse. Full practices have been banned throughout California through the remainder of 2020 at a minimum. Full practices and competitions will only be scheduled once Gavin releases updated guidance. Another bit of fun news that dropped today is that all regional and state playoffs for "Season 1" sports have been cancelled. cifstate.org/covid-19/12.1.20_release

No easy answers, just a lot of waiting and hoping. Today's news was fully expected, given the surge of cases and hospitalizations in the state. Hopefully, we'll be able to get going in January for a modified calendar.

No. Dr. Mark Ghaly from CDPH has said the guidance was forthcoming, in the not-too-distant future, with only a few logistical issues to iron out, and he's been saying that for six weeks now. So far there's been nothing.

In the meantime, teams are still travelling to Arizona (I think Nevada is out, for now) for youth sports competition.

I also don’t believe that all high school sports are lost for this year, but some may be. In a normal year the JV and Varsity programs of Girls and Boys Water Polo, Swimming, and Diving with practice time and competitions will book a pool solid for all 3 High School seasons. A director I spoke to said they had to get creative to fit it all in to 2 seasons. If the CIF start get pushed much more than about 4 weeks she didn’t think they’d be able to accommodate all programs. They’ve already written off all of January and let the local club team book the pool through the end of January. The high profile sports will likely happen but some of the more fringe sports may not.

Volleyball (boys) was moved back to spring yesterday, to try and avoid losing two straight entire seasons. I don't anticipate a full season in any sport, but there is the ability to get some competition in.

IF CIF moved Boys Volleyball to Season 2 to avoid losing a second straight year, that means CIF believes Season 1 sports are at risk for cancellation.

The spring could still be salvaged in some capacity though, from what I have heard and the people I've talked to.

The CDPH finally released the guidance for youth sports, and it is brutal. As a quick reminder, California has a tier system that goes from Purple (where everyone is now), Red (the lowest San Diego ever got), Orange, and lastly Yellow. High School Football will be banned until San Diego gets down to Orange Tier. Outdoor Basketball will also be allowed in Orange Tier, but Indoor Basketball is banned until we get all the way down to Yellow Tier. The full list is in the table toward the bottom of this page: www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/outdoor-indoor-recreational-sports.aspxI haven't seen an official CIF response, but schedules could get weird with track and field, along with swimming and diving becoming late winter sports while football and basketball could become late spring sports.

CIF won't announce anything until January at this point. They have a cut-away date of the 19th, from what I was told by a couple different coaches, which obviously could change...but time is really running out on the calendar to salvage even a partial season for some sports.

It does appear they are working on cranking something out. The unofficial CIF response, at least from the San Diego Section Commissioner was "[The CDPH Guidance is] a surprise because they said there would be no word before Jan. 1, but this is par for the course. I guess some news is better than no news. We would have liked to get this in October. We still have a chance to play. We have guidelines to work with. We’ll have to see what impact this has." For club sports, the CDPH Guidance closed the loophole of competing in neighboring states. They also added a county restriction that prohibits travel farther than 1 county. San Diego club athletes, once competition is allowed for their sport, will only be allowed to compete against Orange County, Riverside, and Imperial based athletes. San Diego athletes will not be allowed to compete against Los Angeles or San Bernardino athletes. If a tournament is held in Orange County, in addition to their own athletes, they will only be allowed to invite either San Diego or Los Angeles clubs because LA kids are forbidden from competing against San Diego kids even if neither team has traveled more than 1 county.
