Link: Student Performance disparity in Washington DCLink: DC School Spending and OutcomesIf you believe that interactions with police is the largest threat to the black community, you might get an argument from some saying that worse are low incomes, gangs/crimes, incarceration/fatherless homes and poor academic performance. That last problem of poor academic performance is arguably the one factor that contributes the most to the other problems that that community deals with. As funding for DC Schools, for example, are among the nation's highest per pupil yet posts some of the worst academic achievement scores in the land, why aren't the BLM protestors as concerned with the academic outcomes for their children and pushing for these failing school districts to be "defunded and replaced" by something that will work better for them?

Well, I think the conversation is understandably hyper-focused on Police interaction which is spurring that particular conversation. But the overall conversation has also included discussions about disparity in funding to lower income area schools due to how property taxes are appropriated. Obviously each states laws on how schools are funded are different. But it's not a new topic and has been batted around for a long time and needs to be addressed as part of an overall solution to providing educational opportunites across all demographics. It's also not the only discussion that needs to be had. Social services, economic development, etc all need to be addressed as well. There are a lot of factors that go into a students success, and sometimes just throwing money at a school isn't the only solution. Cultural, family and other soft topics play an important part. This is a very complex issue and there won't be any one solution which will ultimately work.
