Millennium's DaRon Holmes transfers to boys hoops national powerhouse Montverde Academy Dana Scott - Arizona Republic www.azcentral.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/05/28/millennium-boys-basketballs-daron-holmes-leaves-montverde-academy/5278396002/DaRon Holmes is joining the growing list of several top Arizona Interscholastic Association high school boys transferred to prep schools. But the difference for Holmes is that he announced via social media Thursday he's moving to Florida to join the perennially top-ranked national championship contender Montverde Academy. In a series of tweets, the reigning Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year and The Republic's two-time All-Arizona Boys Basketball Player of the Year finalist thanked Millennium's head coach Ty Amundsen and his staff as well the Arizona basketball community. "First, I want to thank Coach Ty (Amundsen), the Millennium coaching staff and my teammates for three tremendous years," Holmes said. "My game has grown considerably since I first stepped onto a (high school) court. And, I cannot thank you enough for your investment in me as a player and teammate. "Next, I want to thank the AZ basketball community and media for supporting me during my time playing AIA ball. The fact that I have the opportunity to further my game is due, in part, to the accomplishments made here in Arizona. "Finally, it’s with the purpose of taking my growth to a new level of competition and development that my family and I are taking this important next step. We are announcing that I will finish my final year of HS competing for Coach Kevin Boyle at Montverde Academy." The 6-9 junior small forward is ranked No. 51 on the ESPN 60 top players in the nation for it Class of 2021 ratings. "He averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.1 assists, led the Tigers to a 24-6 record last season and were the 5A state championship runner-up the past two years. Montverde went undefeated at 25-0 last season. The Eagles were scheduled to compete in the Geico Nationals tournament in New York City April 2-4, but it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has produced several notable alumni including NBA All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers, D'Angelo Russell of the Minnesota Timberwolves, R.J. Barrett of the New York Knicks. Montverde has won four national titles under head coach Kevin Boyle since he arrived at the program in 2011."
