Padres acquire reliever Emilio Pagan from the Rays for Manuel Margot and prospect Logan Driscoll. Pagan was the closer for the Rays last season, and had really good numbers.
So now, CF for now will be between Wil Myers, Franchy Cordero and Trent Grisham.

This bullpen is about to be legendary status. Goodness gracious. 3 of the top 10 relievers in the 2nd half of last year : Yates, Pomeranz and Pagan.

The Padres are now perfectly setup for having even more "Bullpen Days!"

The Padres are now perfectly setup for having even more "Bullpen Days!" Wouldn't be a bad strategy, but I don't think that's the connection here.

Perhaps the Pagan could be a final piece in a trade with Boston?

Yates is mildly expensive in arbitration, so it could be a way to slash some payroll and get a decent return back considering how dominant he has been.

This trade opens up some opportunities for Grisham, Naylor or even Franchey or Trammell in the mid season. Good luck to Margot, he is going to a winning franchise.....maybe he can feast on AL pitching.

This acquisition suggests, to me, that the Padres are getting prepared for their starting pitchers to be unable to pitch long innings much of the time.
This could be an interesting strategy where the opposing hitters have to face a different pitcher almost every at bat.
Have Preller and Green possibly changed how some teams could use their pitching staffs in the future?

Have Preller and Green possibly changed how some teams could use their pitching staffs in the future? Davies and Lucchesi are prime "twice through the order" guys. These acquisitions make them more valuable. The Yankees did this with their rotation in recent years with Betances, Britton and Chapman. The Rays had the top pitching WAR in baseball last year, so they could afford to lose Pagan with so many arms available to them. Padres now project to have the best bullpen in the NL, tied with the Yankees in projected WAR for the best in baseball.
