I donโt see the problem with retiring the number. Kawhi is a once in a generation player. Even if we retired 1 number every 10 years your great grandchildren will be long dead before we run out of usable numbers.

Good for Kawhi! His success is well deserved.

Wish had they givin #15 jersey instead of #1 You are confusing me with that statement. Kawhi Leonard when he played at San Diego State wore #15. They are not retiring it per se, only hanging it up in the rafters. In fact I heard on the radio just in the last couple of days that someone asked Steve Fisher, "What if some recruit comes here and asks for #15 to wear?" Steve said, "Well he better be one H--- of a player before they allow him to wear it!" * Also, back in 1970-71 we had a player wear No. 52, (Gary Schneider) so I think whoever said they don't have numbers above #39 is wrong about that. In the Media Guide they also show players who wore numbers #53,#54. and #55.

I don't recall anyone saying they didn't have numbers over 39, what has been said is that there are only 36 numbers allowed (0 thru 5 and combinations thereof), so that may be a misinterpretation of what was said.

So that leaves only a possibility of 36 numbers to choose from. I'm guessing they do that because when the player fouls, the ref can more easily signal the jersey number to the score/stat keeper

maybe time to change the jersey numbers rule - have the ref who is making the call just walk over to the scorers table . Not that far away .

I cannot recall why Kawhi changed his number to 2, when he went pro. I'm sure someone here knows.

I cannot recall why Kawhi changed his number to 2, when he went pro. I'm sure someone here knows. It's because he was about to take a dump on the entire league.

Really, people are just NOW realizing that players donโt wear numbers with the digits 6, 7, 8 and 9 in college basketball!?

I miss the days when players had to raise their hands when they were called for a foul. Live or even on TV it's not always clear now days.

how does the NBA handle numbers 6 , 7, 8 , 9
maybe let the ref tell scorer or maybe use both hands - twice if need be

Didn't the players unoffically retire it already by refusing to wear it out of respect to "the Legend?"

Didn't the players unoffically retire it already by refusing to wear it out of respect to "the Legend?" Apparently Ben Perez was the last to wear #15 during the 2015-16 season. It is expected that no player will wear it again at SDSU.

How do NBA officials designate who committed the foul?
