Go ahead punch the sky, it won’t change the fact that they win 9 games. They need to improve the offense, but that does not take away from the coaching job this season. More often than not, with what they had on hand, they don’t win 9 games. Changes will be made on the offensive side of the ball. But let’s hear it, what was the problem with the offense. Scheme? What did you want to see? Execution, what in particular? I want to hear what made them hot garbage. Yes, he absolutely did. Was the offense good? No, but they did two things very well during the course of the season. Time of position and turnovers. This was by design. They didn’t square peg a round hole. Does this mean the offense was good and there should be no changes, no. But do you know how many OC’s keep pressing and keep exposing their teams to more risk? Look at the lack of production from the QB position and poor utilization of players skill sets along with pathetic play calling. I understand what Rocky wants out of the Offense (win time and don't turn it over) but this staff is doing a poor job of everything when you look at it.

Stupid conversation, missing Rocky’s point... Winning nine games is hard and people should be happy... Winning nine games against the teams we played was, by relative terms, easy. Or it should have been - the only reason it didn't look easy is because our offense SUCKS. With a decent offense (average or even slightly below average) we smoke 9 of our opponents, and beat at least two more in hard fought games. With a decent offense we will a minimum of 11 games against this weak schedule. This schedule was a joke. Nor should he be - the Western division title was handed to him on a silver platter before the season even began, but Jeff Horton gave it away. Which is the same thing he said after LAST season. "Changes," were made, and the offense was just as bad. But does Rocky know that? Does he believe that?? Same thing was true last year, and he didn't change the staff. He tolerated failure and gave those coaches another chance. They failed AGAIN. I'm not happy with HOW we won 6 of those 9 games. They were garbage wins over BAD teams that could have EASILY been losses. We just got lucky that our defense was just good enough to hold our opponents to their season lows in scoring. Yeah, he made, "Changes," after last season, too. Band aids were put on deep gashes that needed surgery. We'll see what happens, but our offense (or lack thereof) was horrendous the last two seasons and cost us division titles, if not outright Conference Championships. And it got us BLOWN OUT in our Bowl Game last year. Full on embarrassed on national TV. If that is how you really feel, I mean really feel then you have serious issues... it is a University and it is a game... of it defines you then you have issues... You completely missed my point because of your myopia...

Yes, that’s it. If you happen to notice how great of a coaching job Long did this year to give his club as constituted the best chance to win week in and week out, you don’t want to see any thing get fixed. Effin unreal, run down a 9 win season, why, because it want to anyone’s particular preferred manner of winning. I don’t like the cut of that guys jib crap. The reason the offense is bad as it was this year, is because Rocky didn't fire Horton last year. I would be happy with a 9 win season if we played a bunch of good teams (like we used to in the 90's and 2000's). In fact, we did not. Our signature wins were: BYU, UCLA, Fresno St. Their records are 7-5, 4-8, 4-8. That's not really something to crow about, imo. We wasted a great chance with this defense to be in the Cotton Bowl, and some of you are happy with 9 wins against a bunch of tomato cans. We could have, and should have, done better. ... and if we played Air Force and Boise this year instead of 2 other pathetic MWC teams we barely beat .., we’d have 7 wins (again) instead of 9. All 9 win seasons are not created equally

As a defensive coach, Rocky deserves even more credit. He absolutely does. But he probably needs to be demoted to DC, because that's what he is. An OUTSTANDING defensive coordinator, one of the very best. He's not a head coach. Just stop

2008 - 2-10 season 2019 - 9-3 season It was coaching on both sides of the ball that brought home those 9 wins. Don’t act like it was a 2-10 season. Yeah, true. But in 2008, we played against Notre Dame, a 10-win BYU squad, an 11-win TCU squad and a Utah team that went undefeated, including beating Alabama in the Sugar bowl. When the MWC was actually good. I bet that 2008 Aztec team, horrible though it was, could've won 5 or 6 against the pack of fecking losers that was this year's schedule. stop They lost to Cal Poly and a bunch of other crappy teams... silly

So Texas just changed up it's coaching staff (including their OC), before their bowl game. A few interesting comments from the HC. I would like to hear similar comments from Rocky. "After taking time, looking back and evaluating the season in its totality, I am very disappointed in our performance in a number of areas in 2019," Herman said. "7-5 will never be our standard at Texas and I take full responsibility for any and all of our shortcomings and know we need to do a better job coaching across the board. With that said, I do believe the future is very bright, have decided to make some changes to our staff as we head into bowl preparation and look to finish strong in the final weeks of fall recruiting." www.yahoo.com/sports/tom-herman-fires-multiple-texas-assistants-in-massive-staff-overhaul-235400069.html

Yeah, the winningest coach in MWC history and the guy who took us to 9 straight bowls is NOT a head coach Silly me Dude, going to crappy bowl games, when 78 out 130 teams go, a bowl game that nobody attends and the school loses a boat load of money being in, it's simply not a valid metric. 78. Out of 130. You REALLY gotta suck not to get in a bowl nowadays. The biggest most important thing is that Aztec football is IRRELEVANT. Aztec students don’t care. For generations now. San Diego does not care. The national media and just overall college football fans don’t care. We are irrelevant, draw small crowds... that should bother everyone. UCF is no longer irrelevant, Boise mostly not for 10 years, Cincy Not for most of the past 10 years (excluding the Tuberville failure), Memphis isn’t ... These 7, or 8, or 9 win seasons are nice, they’re decent. But at the end of the day, they’re not memorable and do nothing to capture the fan base or city/county of SD ... and it’s NEVER been important to be relevant - thanks to the stadium & West campus opportunity and for the opportunity to play in a NY6 game and elevate the program. I’m not saying every season ...but how about just once? Just one time?! Steve Fisher was able to do it with Aztec BB. Rocky has not and it’s clear he never will. Not important to him. I guess he’s too old school to dream or aspire. Every time there’s even a glimmer of hope for that, his squads mess the bed the very next game. Is he better than every coach since Claude Gilbert? Yes, no doubt. Did he start this? No Brady Hoke did. But he kept some good amount of success going. But we have plateaued. It’s not crazy to thing we could regress again like last season. This view seems to be fine to the Rocky supporters on here. To others, not. But I don’t think one Rocky supporter on here can make a convincing argument that we are relevant in any way- with our middling attendance, student and alum apathy, pathetic kickoff time slots, etc. I think we should aspire to be better, to want more. I’m appreciative of Rockys accomplishments. I am. Because of his success, it’s not crazy to think we can even bigger success. Much bigger. But - I also see some back sliding, the apathy toward the program... and I also see the brave new world of college football. We are 7-9 win season-ing our way into further insignificance and maybe if he stays for another 10 years of 7-9 seasons we’ll drop football cuz we get 15,000 people in a nice on campus stadium playing in the Sun belt Conference. You better believe if this program doesn’t loudly force its way into being substantially more relevant, this or any future administration will be happy to put a sport like football out of business. And they will sleep just fine at night.

Just check out UNLV Rocky haters. Their coach just got flushed after going 20-40 in 5 years. That school has roughly the same resources and alumni base as SDSU, yet they have been horrible forever. Rocky on the other hand is 80-40 in 10 years. That’s unprecedented success at this level. Rocky knows football, Rocky haters do not. Rocky > Haters Haters STFU please. It’s embarrassing. Remember how some on this site said that Rocky Long couldn't coach because he had a losing record as a head coach when he was hired here? Well, he doesn't have a losing record as a head coach now and has been named Coach of the Year in the MWC twice as I recall.. We've got some real geniuses posting here.

I can see both sides in this discussion. Long is the best HC that SDSU is ever going to get. He lost several assistants a couple of years ago because they got raises to leave for other programs. It is tough to hire good assistants when your school does not pay the going rate. Winning 8 or 9 games is something to be celebrated based upon SDSU's history. However, when you have one of the best defensive teams in the country and Long himself, says it is the best defense he has every had, and you can't even win the Western Division of the MWC then it has to be disappointing. With any offense at all this team wins the MWC and goes undefeated and to a major Bowl game which I beiieve is the Cotton Bowl this year. So yeah, it is dissappointing. Long is getting a bit defensive of any criticism that he receives but he is a very good coach and SDSU will have a very tough time replacing him when he leaves. Everyone wants to make it to a P5 conference, but sometimes the odds and limitations to the program are too much to overcome. Excellent post. This is how I feel, and a lot on here feel the same way. Rocky is the best Head Coach we have had for a long time. The problem the last three years has been with most of the offensive coaches. After last year we were told the offense problems were going to be fixed. We were told Horton was going with the spread offense. It turns out that it wasn’t really a spread offense, and the offensive problems didn’t get fixed like we were told they would. No matter how much some try on here, you cannot justify scoring less than 14 points against Hawaii and Nevada whose total defense ranked 126th and 124th in the nation. Both teams defenses gave up AN AVERAGE of over 30 points per game. So although I am grateful for a 9-3 record with wins ove UCLA and BYU, (Fresno State sucked this year so I didn’t include them), I am very frustrated because like you and others have stated if we had just an average offense we would be winning the MWC title with a record of 12-0 or 11-1, and going to the Cotton Bowl on New Years Day. So just because I am frustrated with our inept offense that doesn’t mean I hate Rocky. Some of you need to stop being drama queens. Instead, I simply feel we need a change in offensive coordinators. However, unlike some on here I don’t believe that will happen until Rocky retires. Most on here are upset with Horton, and not Rocky. My, and others, frustration will just grow if Horton stays and we will be told once again that Horton will fix the problems with the offense. Most of us know that will never happen as long as Horton is the offensive coordinator.

State needs to sort out the offense, but with what they had, the staff did an amazing job. Both sides. Are you serious? The offensive coaching was horrendous. Combined with last season it was arguably the worst offensive coaching job in the history of Aztec football. Defending Horton and his offensive staff is just... mind boggling. Only the biggest die hard, rose colored glasses wearing homers could support the job they've done over the last two years. The last two years have been an offensive debacle. Interesting fact. I just hired an ex-Aztec football player who was very good, played a lot and everyone would know him if I was able to say his name. Anyways he says nothing but great things about Coach Horton, he loves him, says he is a great human being, like a father and would do anything for him. However, this former player also says he has no business being an OC, is in over his head, doesn’t understand what needs to be done in the role and thinks it is a terrible decision for the program and Rocky. Again, he refuses to say one bad thing about Horton but believes he has no business being an OC for the Aztecs. That is all I needed to hear to convince me of what we all know on here about Horton. Great human being and coach but not the OC we need at State. I was surprised on how high this player speaks of Horton but might be one of the reasons Rocky struggles with a coaching change.

Look at the lack of production from the QB position and poor utilization of players skill sets along with pathetic play calling. I understand what Rocky wants out of the Offense (win time and don't turn it over) but this staff is doing a poor job of everything when you look at it. What players were not used per their skill set? What play calls were pathetic and what would you have called differently. 1) Get the ball to the TE's more 2) Bryd and Busby in the slot And then throw it to them in space spread out the D in the BOX 3) Quicker plays to WR down the sidelines to spread out the D 4) Benson with his size and speed down the side line 5) Baker sooner then later (something) 6) Brookshire change of pace/scramble/play action roll out (anything) not just Wildcat run This is just some of the things that were not done. _________________________________________________________ Things that were done that should have been improved. 1) Stop running up the backside of the OLine 2) Stop running the Wildcat with Brookshire 3) only using Bryd on the Jet Sweep 4) Having Agnew not look off his receivers 5) Letting Agnew roll only to his right 6) Running same predictable run plays, then have 3 and long. The punter did more for the offense then the play calling did!

I'm not sure I've heard all that many people complaining about a 9-3 record.
HOW those 3 losses occurred, however, is an entirely different matter. Lots of people on that tangent, and I'm one of them. If nobody cared about them, then there would be an entirely different -- and much larger -- problem:
Apathy.
Be glad fans care. Fix the glaring and very-fixable problem that cost 3 (possibly 4 if you count a MWC Title crown) victories.
The shots may have been fired, but they miss the mark.

The funny thing is that most of us who have been critical of Coach Horton have said pretty much the same thing. Good guy, good coach - except as an OC. He just doesn't have the creative/strategic mind for the job. He had never been an OC before, and now we know why. He's just not good as an OC. It's something that is outside of his abilities.

Isn't Horton here as OC because Rocky wanted him here? If Rocky keeps Coach Horton then I will not support him. If Rocky keeps Coach Horton then he is accepting failure and will hurt the program going forward just as much as he will help it (great defense, horrible offense). Rocky has to know how bad this offense has been for the last two seasons. And if he's OK with it going forward then I'm not OK with Rocky being here. On the other hand, if he replaces Horton, Schmidt, and Morgan then I will remain a STRONG supporter of Rocky Long as HC for the Aztecs.
