It’s a fake. We possibly wore black helmets one season. When Claude Gilbert installed the Veer and switched the uniforms to white tear away jerseys. But that was 40 years prior to the SD spear logo. We still had angry Monty or stylized Monty at that time. And our red helmets had BLOCK AZTECS lettering. This is correct, 1981 season- after which Claude and staff were unceremoniously fired... in the biggest mistake in Aztecs football history. The one year black helmets had the same block lettering.

We still had angry Monty or stylized Monty at that time. And our red helmets had BLOCK AZTECS lettering. The year Claude Gilbert was fired (I don’t remember the year exactly) the Aztecs came out in red jerseys, white pants, and black helmets. They went over like a turd in a punch bowl with the fans. I remember a home game midway through the season when they came out for pregame warmups in the new uniforms, then went back into the locker room and changed into the all blacks - except of course the helmets were still black. If I remember correctly they continued with the all black until the last game when it had been announced Gilbert was fired, and the team cam out in the new red/white uniforms as a show of support for Claude. I was an SDSU season ticket holder with my parents back then, about middle school aged, and didn’t even know NMSU existed. There was actually a somewhat logical reason for the uniform switch that 1981 season. The administration and athletic department, in a way premature “getting too big for their britches” moment, thought that Aztec games needed to be moved to day time for more tv options, but also so that all the wins would be racked up earlier in the day, so the games would be done before bed times in the eastern half of the country and the winning scores would make all deadlines for Sunday AM newspapers everywhere in the country. With all that in mind, it was thought the all black unis would be a big disadvantage in the warmer/hotter daytime sun in SD, especially during the first half of the season. Remember back then that the uniforms were much heavier, didn’t breathe well ... nothing like today’s uniform technology. Therefore the Red Jerseys and white pants at home. Guess they felt black helmets were needed, instead of red, to round out the look. There’s your Aztec football uniform history lesson from 1981.

But, there was an additional reason that might have caused a change even without the switch to day games. Claude was a big fan of the Alabama uniforms and he wanted to establish his own identity separate from Don Coryell. Claude's popularity among some of the fans took a big hit due to the uniform change. This didn't help him when the winning percentage dropped due to the switch from JC recruiting to high school recruiting.
