It's tempting to say the CIT and CBI are below us, and I think they're pay-for-play, but it could be good for the young guys to get tournament experience. If we reduce minutes substantially for Watson, Hemsley and McDaniels in order to benefit the freshmen, I'd be for it. If we win 20 games, we're in the NIT. Rain meet Parade... If SDSU is not in the Top 100 for NET then they won’t even be considered for the NIT... and right now that is a long shot...

I'll rain a little more. May need to be in top 75-80. The NIT has frozen out more and more non-P5 at larges; just like the NCAAs. Only guarantee is conference regular season champion who doesn't win conference tourney. The whole NET system, particularly Quadrant I and II emphasis, is designed to limit non-P5 postseason bids.

Last year’s NIT featured 12 teams that were automatic qualifiers. Meaning they won the regular season title but failed to win the conference tournament.
A thirteenth team, Grambling, also won their regular season conference title but was banned from the conference tournament amd NCAAs for low graduation rates.
Most of the at-large bids went to memebers of the power conferences: PAC 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and the Big East.
The at-large teams from the lesser conferences were:
Western Kentucky 27–11 (14–4 C-USA) 3rd place RPI 41
Saint Mary’s 30–6 (16–2 WCC) 2nd place RPI 40
BYU 24–11 (11–7 WCC) 3rd place lost in tournament championship game. RPI 67
Boise State (23–9, 13–5 MWC) 2nd place RPI 52
Temple 17–16 (8–10 AAC) 7th place RPI 49 and SOS: 13
It will be very difficult for the Aztecs to earn an NIT bid. They would likely need to finish #2 (maybe #3) in the conference, lose in the MW championship game, and secure enough wins against the right teams to raise their NET rating (replaced RPI) significantly.
BYU finished last year at 24-11 came in third place and lost in the WCC title game, which was good enough for a 67 RPI. The second place team in that conference had a 40 RPI and also made the NIT.

It will be interesting to see what NET ratings, good/bad losses, and records teams will need to qualify.

Post-season tournaments other than the NIT were understandably below a national title winning HOF coach like Steve Fisher. However, if Brian Dutcher turns down such an opportunity to provide experience to his young charges, my opinion of the man will drop down a notch.

If it comes down to it, as CIT and CBI are pay for play, it really won't be Dutcher's decision. It will be Wicker's and the admins.

I think that it will be difficult to get significant movement on the NET without a couple of wins against Nevada.

This team is not playing as well as last year's team. We also had Trey Kell and Malik Pope to go with McDaniels. Hopefully in a week my assessment will be different.

The players this year that replaced Kell and Pope are young and not as good (yet?). The other factor is that, last year, Dutcher essentially had a head coach sitting next to him (Hutson) to help him navigate through his first year as head coach. This year, he does not have that luxury. But, I didn't think the team could go on that magical run last season - and they proved me wrong. It could happen again this year, but it will be MUCH more difficult.

Methinks it might be getting close to Aztecarita preparation and countdown to MGT tip off on March 14! Azson, where are you and why haven’t you started the countdown? Gotta go; time to squaeezze some limes! I'm concerned that senility is creeping in. You well know that we never start the countdown thread until we at least play our last regular season game @ the T&M (just in case some inebriate misunderstands and thinks we're in Vegas already). But no matter, as long as your motor-functions are still operating (i.e. your lime-sqaayzin' arm) that's all that's really important.

My motor skills are quite profound! I suggest that this year’s version will provide the necessary elixir to whatever conundrum might confront us. Can we at least begin the countdown to the countdown? :=)
