OK, the level of competition hasn't been great, but Vista is taking care of business. Tonight, it was Mt. Carmel who were the sacrifical lambs as Vista crushed them 67-6.
Yes, 67-6.
QB Josh Davies had a 99 yard TD run (Aztec William had it as a 97 yard run, and I though the ball was spotted at the 3 as well, but I guess we couldn't see the final spot because of a partially obstructed view). He's nowhere near the fastest guy on that offense, but he did a fantastic job of faking the ball to running back David Flores who punched through the line like he had the ball and was tackled by FOUR Sundevil defenders who thought he had the ball. That fake opened up the right side and Davies got around the corner and had RB Desmond Taua along for the ride, providing a couple key blocks that helped Davies get into the end zone.
That set the tone for the rest of the night as Vista dominated on both sides of the ball, collecting no fewer than 3 turnovers, one of which was a fumble recovered by Taua for a 50 yard TD. Taua also scored on a 50 yard play when punt returner Zack Spayde attempted a lateral to him, but the ball came up short and bounced off the turf - at which point Taua scooped it up and ran 52 years into the end zone! It was a HORRIBLE decision by Spayde to try and lateral the ball to Taua (Spayde was being dragged down at the time), but Taua being alert and aggressive turned a mistake into six points!
The game was 26-0 after the first quarter, then 47-6 at half. They had a running clock for the final minute of the first half and all of the second half.
Backup backup running back (5th on the depth chart) Jeziah Luzon scored on a 20-something yard TD run, and then on Mt. Carmel's first play on the ensuing drive he scooped up a fumble and ran in for his second TD in just seconds of playing time! That's the kind of game it was.
Vista dominated where you need to dominate to be a great team - on the lines. Vista's offensive line has been fantastic all season long, and they seem to be getting better.
Being in Division II this year could give Vista a clear path to a section title. Granted, a lower level title, but after the last 6 years they'll take it.
The Panthers have a bye next week, and then it's down to Poway for a much tougher game that will really test how good the team is this year.
But, so far, it seems like Vista is back. Somehow the world seems like a better place because of that.
