(From Mark Ziegler UT 2:40 today) "Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson told the Union-Tribune he has held discussions with Gonzaga about leaving the West Coast Conference for the Mountain West, perhaps as early as next season. Gonzaga might not be alone, either. Sources say BYU would consider a return to the Mountain West at least in basketball if Gonzaga joins."

If this was the route, WSU would have been a better option who wanted into the MW. GO figure...

I love this idea. Utah's newspaper reported how fed up that school named ybu was over finishing in third or lower in wcc. Ybu deserved that for leaving the mwc in the first place.

How about we pass on BYU and go for St. Mary's instead?

Wow The Gonzaga, St Marys idea is a good one.

If Gonzaga and BYU were to leave, St. Mary's would go to 10 straight MMs at least. BYU is a much better rival team for Utah State and the other mountain area teams. Plus, I LOVE beating them!

How about we pass on BYU and go for St. Mary's instead? If that meant BYU would move in for football too, that would raise attendance all around the league.

Any expansion with BYU that doesn’t involve them coming back to the MW in all sports should be a no. (I really don’t want them at all anyways) Any expansion talk with Gonzaga where they get some kind of special deal should be a no.
Any expansion should also remove any sweetheart deal Boise got.

This could be very good for the MW. However, the conference schedule should be modified obtain the best RPI for the best teams also.

Sounds like they're considering another "Boise-Better" deal like BS got in football i.e. a higher % of Football TV money, except with Gonzaga and BB.

Sounds like they're considering another "Boise-Better" deal like BS got in football i.e. a higher % of Football TV money, except with Gonzaga and BB. I dont know that it would make sense to do that with Gonzaga. I think the Zags would find winning conference games more difficult in the MW if only due to having to play in high altitude podunk arenas like Whyo, AF, and CSU. As Ziegler notes in the article, more teams would be contributing to the NCAA credits rather than just sucking off of the Gonzaga tit like the WCC does now.

Can we dump San Jose State? Please. Please. Please. Would be the best move the MWC could ever do.

Let’s blow it up and start over. Too much dead weight in the conference in both football and basketball.

It would be nice to get rid of SJSU, as well as some of the mountain schools ( Air Force, Col ST, Wyoming). I think the Nation is not aware how tough it is to play at sea level then 5-7000 ft elevation over the course of a week to ten days. SDSU would have a better record in my opinion playing better competition at sea level that a weaker elevation team.

Would take ‘em both in a heartbeat. BYU games added juice to Cox/Viejas long before the first Sweet 16 run. Gonzaga does the same.

When did the MWC change its rule that schools must compete in both BB and CFB?
