By way of background: so far this season, Devin Watson is shooting 41.3% from the field overall; 37.4% from three. His points per game are well down from his sophomore season at USF (20.3 to 12.5), almost entirely due to reduced shot and free throw volume - he's also playing fewer minutes per game.

One big difference, and this is more of a credit to X Thames than an attack in any way on Watson, Thames never seemed to miss when the game was on the line and he always wanted the ball in that situation, at least that is the way it seems looking back on it.

Heath was the same way with his free throws made in the final minutes of games.

I agree with this that Thames was clutch and wanted the ball, but I don't think Watson shies away from wanting the ball at the end of games.

Except that he did, and the sample sizes are too small anyway. It's like thinking Michael Jordan was a super "clutch" player with the game on the line because we all remember him (or have seen replays) making a winning shot on Craig Ehlo or pushing off Bryan Russell and making the series winning shot in the NBA Finals. No, Michael Jordan wasn't particularly clutch. He was spectacularly great. These guys pretty much hit as many shots in "clutch" time as they do in non-clutch time. The only real marginal offensive difference between Thames and Watson is that Thames was a marginally better free throw shooter, and it's only 6%. ps - the whole reason I looked into Watson's numbers is because I've been pretty disappointed in his offensive play as of late. HOWEVER, I found that he pretty much has the same rate stats as he did in USF. He's pretty much the player we was, not the player I (and maybe others) thought we were getting.
