1 year in SD and 2 in Vegas on a rotating basis would’ve been the perfect solution. This conference never makes the smart choice, however.

So now instead of room rates being the cause for lower attendance in 2020, the fans who travel not only to support SDSU but to be able to be involved financially with the myriad of other conference tournament games, will stay away.

On one hand it could increase visibility of the MW Conference brand.
But on the other hand having the tournament earlier than the others could diminish its affect on the tournament selectors as we might be out of sight out of mind?
I dont know, but I'm glad its still in Vegas and SHOULD provide cheaper rates on everything if it skips that busy weekend.

Good point...hadn't thought of that scenario...but the MW is basically a one bid league now anyways, so not sure how this will really affect the tournament selection. I'm glad it's still in Vegas.

Good point. Since we are a one bid league then it almost helps having the tourney moved up then, since it won't affect the selection committee. Side note, I know the rankings & schedules dont reflect it but, just by the eye test I think the MW is at the least a 2-bid league. Sad its just not realistic at this point.

I'd rather it be in Vegas one week earlier than somewhere else on the normal week.

Are they avoiding the hotel crunch caused by NASCAR week?

Hopefully this means the tourney will go to a different venue like T Mobile or MGM Grand.

Are they avoiding the hotel crunch caused by NASCAR week? Well this season's Nascar weekend is on March 4, 2018. If that doesn't change then NASCAR and the MGC tournament would overlap, pi$$ing off my buddy who goes for the tourney & poker. Ever since NASCAR hit town he hasn't had a comped room!

Lunardi's newest bracketology has Nevada as an 8 and Boise at 11 as one of the last few in. Still a lot of basketball to play but at least the perception is that the MWC is a 2-bid league right now (even if just barely). Hopefully they won't be the 11 seed on his next revision after Saturday though

Hopefully this means the tourney will go to a different venue like T Mobile or MGM Grand. Not going to happen. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors, or similar group, pays a substantial amount to the MW for hosting the tournament at the T&M. They will not pay if the tournament is at a facility owned by one of the hotels in town. That's really the major reason we're not getting the tournament in San Diego.

So I talked to someone high up with 1st hand knowledge of this. You're right about the tourney staying at T&M but here's why the date changed. An entity funded by the casinos is responsible for team rooms, which they've alway been able to get comp'd. Because of the demand for rooms due to ConExpo they had to pay $150k for them last year. They weren't excited to keep doing that so the MW decided to move it up a week so they could stay in Vegas. The MW was told that their other option was to go to a different city if they didn't want to move the date up. There wasn't a contract for 2020 so that's why it's the first year for the date switch.

If we're best case out of at large position before the season ends then Dutcher should minimizes his starters' minutes to save their legs for the conference tourney. A page out of Pop's Spurs playbook. To do otherwise is adhering to Thompson's stupidity.
