This is a nice addition. The Aztecs have pursued Butler for years and despite facing stiff competition, they got a commitment and they got it early.

We have a logjam at the 1 next year. He'll be a senior next year. Will effectively replace Feagin.

Flynn aside, there are question marks of varying sizes behind each of these players. Adam’s is the largest as he’s been no better than a fifth option since, what, middle school? He also didn’t pass the eye test in his first year at the D1 level. Pulliam didn’t make many waves in high school and his JC results weren’t exactly eye popping. Lamont was more accomplished in HS. He may challenge Pulliam at some point in his freshman year and his path would appear to be wide open as a sophomore.

I think Adam is viewed as more of a SG by the coaching staff but realistically speaking he'll be near the bottom of depth chart unless he improves quite a bit this year, not trying to be mean or anything just how it is. Pulliam has ok size, he can play the 2 for stretches. This pursuit however was definitely geared more towards 2021-2022 than 2020-2021, Trey and Malachi will both be seniors. Ideally Lamont gains some experience and is ready to start in 2021-2022.

What’s interesting is how young he is, just tuned 17 on June 9th supposedly. That makes him a little young for his class, he has a lot of time to grow and develop.

When was the last time that we got a verbal commitment this early? I choose to take it as a good sign.
Teams that leave a scholarship open for three years are failing to recruit properly, period.
Signing multiple plan b or c HS players in the spring or summer isn’t a sustainable model.
Signing three transfers but only one HS player is OK if it was done purposefully. The fact that there is still an open spot means that this outcome wasn’t by design.
The Aztecs program and current coaching staff will need the 2020 class to be a good one. If it isn’t, there’s going to be huge problems.

If it isn’t, there’s going to be huge problems. Are you saying late season pick-ups Mitchell, AG and Chang cannot be duplicated? (I Kind of agree, we got lucky with Mitchell and AG, if they continue to progress) Chang, we will never know, but him seemed to be anxious about getting his time, and attention. Just look at his social media. The Mensah boys, were long term signs with Kwaku Amoaku. Long term projects too. Everyone thought Jordan would go to USC, his mother played VB there. I think she still is employed by Southern Cal? We're friends with USC boosters, and I though his GF was at USC. To me Seiko was an odd pickup, he played at Serra Canyon, but with a team of all-stars, with no exceptional skill sets. Pulliam was out of the blue, but I guess Dutch likes experienced back courts, Watson, Flynn, Feagin transfers. Keshad was in early, never wavered. Neither did Jalen, when the CBS alleged scandal hit. Butler signing is on par with Hemsely, 4-star (ESPN) kid out of the IE, chose SDSU over PAC12 shools.

Mitchell was a very nice late addition. He was a Hail Mary that required both a late surge and a de-commitment. He not only provided the Aztecs with their only viable three but also prevented the Aztecs from embarrassingly carrying two empty scholarships that year. After years of struggling to recruit bigs, multiple whiffs on highly sought after players, and a misevaluated Narain the coaches went all in on the Mensahs. The Mensahs had some other suitors but they weren’t being wooed quite like some of our previous targets. I think that was a smart move. Nathan certainly showed some promise but the jury still out on him. I’m not sure what we have in Joel but I remain hopeful. I think that Aguek flashed some potential but I’m not as enthusiastic or certain as most Aztecs fans. Ed Chang was a stiff last year. Watson was a good transfer as is Flynn. Feagin appears to be a solid addition. I’m not expecting Pulliam to be better than Aqueel Quinn but see being better than D’erryl. I see Yanni as being a low impact transfer like Izundu, G. Green, or Big Red Johnson. I’d be ecstatic if he could give us as much as Chol. I hope that the Aztecs can continue to target and sign players. But I do prefer that we get a solid percentage of scholarships filled prior to the end of the basketball season. *I agree that we can’t expect to get impactful HS recruits at the last minute. We absolutely relied on Mitchell these last two years and I hope that his wealth of experience as an underclassman pays off big in the coming years. I also am hopeful about Aguek but not yet sold on him. I can’t overstate how confused and nervous I was to see us sign a single HS recruit for 2019 after struggling to fill the roster in the preceding two years. I’d be shocked if we add anyone else for 2019. With a scholarship open for three years, the coaching staff will need to deliver big time in 2020. Butler’s verbal is a great start. It’s especially encouraging that our newest coach has landed our first 2020 recruit. We weren’t going to land Butler with our previous staff.

was a good step in having him be here when Che was visiting - could be the guy getting Che the ball in 2021 or even as a preview in 2020
