Devin Watson was the shining star last night with 20 points AND 8 assists. He will only get better, too, which is pretty incredible if you think about it. He looks like the real deal so far.

That stuck out for me as well. I also noticed the video scoreboard displayed 'SDSU' rather than the usual 'Aztecs'. Maybe the change was only made for the Nike N7 game? We'll see on Monday. Monday will be interesting. Between the announcer and the scoreboard I doubt it was a coincidence. Though, if we assume this was done to 'appease' some group, then we are also assuming it was cool for us to trot out the Aztec Warrior as usual? Strange. Actually, that's something to watch out for at to the game tonight. If we hear "San Diego State football team" then we'll know for sure something stinks

And only 1 turnover. The two past sweet 16 teams SDSU teams had excellent point guards (DJ Gay and Xavier Thames). I think Watson is in that mold and can lead this team. I agree with most of the assessment.

Watson stepped it up and gained needed confidence last night. Now we see why he is starting.
Mitchell still has freshman nerves. Nerves and a lack of confidence make it abnormal when shooting - especially once your heart-rate gets going. Once Mitchell gets over those mental roadblocks he will be good - really good. The kid is starting over Hemsley and Montana which says a lot.
Rooks is a 10th man. His man is the one doing all the scoring or at least getting clean shots off.
Our biggest problem is rebounding.

Hemsley's a mystery to me. He's a far better player than he's showing and we need him to be that player. He just needs to get out of his own head and relax.

I agree with most that has been said here. However, I think after 3+ years we know what we are going to get with Kell. He's decent scorer, hustler, rebounder and defender. However I think his court awareness is lacking and he needs to now defer to Watson to let him run the show. Long passes into traffic should be eliminated and he needs to stick to his strengths and move without the basketball. Watson will find him.

I was impressed by them going inside. Now, McNeese is a short team so maybe that was their plan. I'm anxious to see how they do when they encounter a taller team because rebounding is still a problem. McNeese shouldn't have gotten so many offensive rebounds. Watson is definitely the real deal.

Simple:
More Watson.
Less hemsley.

Simple: More Watson. Less hemsley. Wasn't that a given by the lineup?

Simple: More Watson. Less hemsley. Wasn't that a given by the lineup? Yes. The more watson is in with hemsley out, the greater the chances of winning. Last night was a reflection of that.

Defense remains a huge concern. McNeese was terrible, but was able to put up 33 in the 2nd half. 2nd half interior defense was bad. Aztecs even played some zone. Execution was . . . not good. Something positive about D - first half denial of open 3 looks was strong. D.J. Gay, pregame show, paraphrasing - "It is a very bad idea to rely on your offense to win games. It will be a long season if they try to outscore opponents." It is going to be a long, long season. The defense is mediocre at best.

It was McNeese State. You can't get anything out of a game against McNeese State.

Getting good production from the starters at the 1 , 2 and 4 position . Need better D and rebounding at the 3 and 5 position . Time for guys to step up if they want PT . Kameron , Nolan , Jalen , Matt , Teki the team needs help on the boards and defending .
Just as Max was starting to hit his three ball he gets hurt . Believe he was also learning the importance of being near the basket for rebounds or put backs
As mentioned earlier Matt needs to drop about 10 pounds or transfer it to Jalen . Both Matt and Teki need to stop being enamored with their three point shooting and work near the basket . That is what the team needs .
We do push the pace more then last year but could still use more passing over dribbling .
Could also see trying to get more involvement earlier from Malik .

This team should be fine on offense with the three headed monster that is Watson, Kell, and Pope. Defensively, we are missing that presence in the middle. We'll need to keep the big 3 healthy, get Max back, and have the freshmen step up to have the season I was hoping for.

These thread is funny after the grief I got for saying Watson would start over Hemsley about a year ago.

In the first exhibition Mitchell was 3-3 shooting 3s. So saying he hasn't shown his outside shooting ability is incorrect. Making sweeping conclusions after a couple of games is a fools errand. 7-11 shooting 3s tonight.

There are a lot of humorous comments in this thread after only four games and especially after watching tonight's game against EIU,

Same potential issues v EIU as v McNeese. Poor 2nd half D, this time on perimeter. Zone is real poor. Watson can't get around or through screens.
On the other hand, I do believe the rebounding was much better.

On the other hand, I do believe the rebounding was much better. When you're up 20-30 points, the defense sometimes can get a little lax in the second half. We're showing better defense overall these past two games...it's a work in progress.
