There will be zillions of threads and responses devoted to this topic. This is the first on AztecMesa. Queston: When it comes to rating the MWC FB teams, how will they be ranked by the preview magazines, the writers, etc.
Here's my guess at this moment:
1. TCU 2. BYU 3. Utah 4. Air Force 5. CSU 6. SDSU 7. UNLV 8. NMU 9. Wyoming
I can see how some might pick UNLV over us since they won last year. There are some factors in our favor that might rate the Aztecs above the Rebs. For one, UNLV has a new coach. I suspect that Bobby Hauck is capable of making Vegas a better team, but a new coach's first season can be problematical. Second, UNLV won narrowly last year. Finally, the game will be played here.
Two factors that will influence the pundits are these:
(1.) How impressed are they by the improvement (modest though it was) made by the Aztecs last year under Brady Hoke?
(2.) How impressed are they by the 2010 Aztec recruiting class?
As for me, I am still looking for that upset that will really jump start Aztec football. A win against Mizzou would qualify for sure. But I am also realistic. . . or should I say just beaten down by 30 years of disappointments. Still, I can't see fewer than 5 wins next year. Five would not do much to improve the status of this program, however, especially if only two of those wins come in conference. I will be somewhat pleased with a 6-6 season, especially if there are few or no embarrassing losses.
I have my hopes, but am afraid to expect more than mediocrity. Sad, isn't it?

I'll play.
1. TCU 2. BYU 3. Utah 4. Wyoming 5. Air Force 6. SDSU 7. CSU 8. UNLV 9. NMU
I think that the middle of the pack, other than the top 2, are fairly equal and that teams 3 - 7 could completely re-order. Hopefully, with that kind of balance within the league, we can get enough teams to 6-7 wins.

Our own feelings on where the Aztecs will finish is another matter. Okay, that having been said, I must confess that I had forgotten how well Wyoming did last year. We play them in Laramie, and that is never easy. That fact, plus the relative performances of the two schools last year do support your placement of the Cowboys. The bottom line is that we desperately need to win a game that most neutral observers think we should lose. Off hand, I cannot think of the last time that happened. AzWm

I think 60-70% of the pundits will pick SDSU above UNLV and UNM, but below CSU.
The rest will pick us above UNLV, UNM, and CSU, but below everyone else.
The probable order of the pundit's top 5 will be:
1. TCU 2. Utah 3. BYU 4. Airforce 5. Wyoming
I believe they are underestimating Wyoming and BYU. Although Unga's absence may be the tipping point.

It wouldn't surprise me if the pundits dropped BYU to third based on having lost Unga. Air Force, I think, will be overrated at a #4 position. Not yet convinced that Wyoming should be rated 4 or 5.

I've got
1. tcu 2. utah 3. byu . . . 4. SDSU - I am a homer 5. AFA - I think AFA might be down a little because they lose a lot of OL and DL 6-9 Anybody's guess
Actually, I think after the top 3, you can make cases for anyone. I think it will be wide open after the top 3.
SDSU's chances, imo, will depend upon how the juco OL perform. If they can upgrade the OL, with our passing game we could be pretty good. Heck we should have gone 6-6 last year.

2 and 3 are interchangeable as are 6, 7, 8 and 9, but I just don't believe that UNM will have the players it takes yet to change up from Rocky's D. And let's face it, despite Rocky's brilliance, UNM never did all that well because it's so damn difficult to recruit to Albuquerque.
I put us above AFA simply because, while they managed to sort of manhandle us last year, they still only scored 26 points on Rocky's D which is less than they scored on other lower division conference teams except for Wyoming.
It's really rather simple facing their offense - our 'backers stay at home and hammer the RBs and, in particular, the QB on every play and they will wear down.

Only team that matters is our Aztecs! As I gaze into my crystal ball, I see a 5th place finish in our future.

Not completely certain of the final line up, as it really doesn't matter to me. Unless we are numero uno, aka the lead dog, the view is always the same. My prediction this year, is that we finish the game against Wyoming at their house and we do not lose this game. We finish the season 7 - 5 and we go bowling.
