With the release of the well received movie, "Battle of the Sexes", I'm reminded of my long standing relationship with the San Diego Sports Arena. From the Gulls to the Rockets, (still bitter), to Ali-Norton, to Coach Wooden's last NCAA Basketball Championship, to Foggy's and Tower Records and....the San Diego Friars.
During the 70's tennis ruled, (I still proudly possess my Arthur Ashe Comp) and San Diego contributed a WTT Team, the Friars, coached by Rocket Rod Laver. I admit I made it to most matches in SD but none in Anaheim. Even with the loss of the Rockets still a memory, it was not unusual for Aztec football to draw between 40-50 thousand fans to a game, the Padres were still basking on their promotion from PCL to NL and finally Coach Coryell coming home to SD. Good times to be sure.
For the record, the most memorable Aztec men's basketball game I ever attended was at the Arena when Tark's UNLV Runnin' Rebels finally defeated Vezie's Aztecs
after each team scored well over 100 points. A packed house going crazy over two halves.
Now, memories aside, I'm happy to say I'll soon be continuing my long standing relationship with my beloved Gulls.

and while we were in the upper deck at the Sports Arena, and you sat there quiet most of the game, you all of a sudden blurted out "Suck on it Tark, Suck on it"
