Ok, I know we still have about a week before the 2017 Season opens. But, just for fun in the final days before that happens I was thinking about all the fun and exciting football games I have been to over the decades (has it been that long already?).
So, my question for those who have been to some games is. Give us a short description like date (if you remember), who they played, Aztecs in the game, and what made it so exciting for you to watch. (I'm talking about games you saw personally not by video, or on TV)
I'll start. I have been to many Aztec games over the past 48 years (but, not as many as Tom Ables). But, I would have to say the most exciting Aztec football game for me was the Nov. 15, 1969 game vs. New Mexico St. They came in thinking they were going to take care of our Aztecs pretty easily.
This game was famous because Monty (who was with us then) helped the Aztec team score first. 'Ol Monty came out before the game while the Aggie return man (who was small) was catching punts from the New Mexico St. punter. Monty went into his famous Aztec dance with the lighted spear (like he use to have), and was dancing close to this guy. He got closer & closer, and the return guy was getting a little nervous at seeing this large Aztec Warrior coming toward him. Just as Monty was finishing his dance he took his spear & raised up & then threw it in the ground (still burning!) only about 3 feet from the player as the guy shook & jumped back in terror! Everyone who was in the stands loved it, and screamed their approval!
The problem for this poor Aggie return man was when the Aztecs kicked off he was still shaking in his boots from seeing Monty, and he could not handle the kick-off. He fumbled the ball, the Aztecs recovered on the four, and scored on the first play from scrimmage as the crowd was yelling with delight. Everyone said, "Kick it to him again!" when the Aztecs got ready to kick off after scoring.
And, what really made the game for the fans the rest of the evening was the Aztec offense! Before this game I had never seen an offense score more than 2-3 TD's by passing. But, that evening we were going to see some fireworks! Dennis Shaw the QB threw for not only an Aztec record, but at the time a national record with 9 TD's ( yes, I said 9!) He was 26 for 42 for 441 yards! And, receiver Tim Delaney put his name in the Aztec record book with 6 TD's caught on 16 receptions for 275 yards, and a 17.2 yards per catch. Later, Brian Sipe got into the action and threw a TD himself.
Plus, our kicker, Al Limahalu, kicked 10 PAT's which is still the most by any Aztec kicker in a single game!
The Aztecs just seemed to score any time they wanted, and the Aggies could not do a thing about it! They won 70-21! The most exciting game I had ever seen at that time for sure! The team ended undefeated and ranked 18th by UPI that season.

Cal @ SDSU last year was easily the best, most exciting SDSU game I've ever been to that I can remember. I've been coming to games since the mid 90's

Most exciting Aztec games I've watched in person (All home games; I've never seen the Aztecs win on the road and was a last-minute scratch for the 1993 game in which Gutierrez rallied SDSU from down 17 with 12 minutes remaining to win 38-31 at C-Springs in one of the greatest comebacks in Aztec history):
1979, SDSU v. Wisconsin, 24-17. Mark Halda throws an 80-yd.TD bomb with 1:30 remaining for the win 1979, SDSU v. BYU, 14-63. A shellacking by the Zoobs in an end-of-year, winner-take-all, nationally televised Thanksgiving-weekend title game, pitting the 9-1 Zoobs against the 8-2 Aztecs. The lopsided and depressing score doesn't reflect the buildup for this game, which had the campus and city electrified. The crowd was big and loud at the game's start before QB Marc Wilson sliced and diced the Aztecs for big yards and multiple TDs from wire-to-wire. The '79 BYU team with both Wilson and Jim McMahon calling snaps was likely the best, most-talented in BYU history. They were something and probably should've been considered for the mythical National Championship. 1981, SDSU v. Iowa St., 52-31. The Cyclones came to San Diego 3-0-1 off a stunning 7-7 tie in Norman, Okla., against the No. 5 Sooners. Though they were ranked No. 12, the Aztecs behind Matt Kohler's 500+ yard passing night picked the boys from Iowa apart. The Aztecs could've scored 70, but had called off the dogs by halfway through the third quarter. Most of Iowa St.'s points came in fourth-quarter garbage time. The crowd was big, loud and raucous. SDSU entered the month of October 4-0 and ranked No. 25 for the first time since '77. But the promising start was dashed the following week by the annual curb-stomping administered by BYU's Steve Young-fueled offense. 1986, SDSU v. BYU, 10-3. Not a particularly exciting game, but after 8 years of frustration in the WAC, the Aztecs manage to wrest the conference championship away from the Zoobs. 1986, SDSU v. Iowa, 38-39. A bitter Holiday Bowl loss. After the Aztecs took a 38-36 lead after what looked like a game-winning a TD with under a minute remaining, the Hawkeyes kick a long FG as time expires to escape the Murph with a win. This was big-time college football on a national stage in a sold-out stadium. The Aztecs performed well, just not well enough to win. 1990, SDSU v. Miami, 28-30. This was one of the first signs of life in a program that had been moribund (in spite of the 1986 WAC title aberration) for nearly the whole of the 1980s. The Aztecs shoved the No. 2 'Canes all around the field, provoking the Convicts into a number of bench-clearing rumbles. SDSU was the better team that day, though it was not reflected in the score due to several missed FGs. This game caught the eye of a New Orleans teenager named Marshall Faulk and set the stage for the dynamic, yet ultimately doomed, teams of the early '90s. 1991, SDSU v. Pacific, 55-34. Just a ridiculous, record-setting night for Marshall Faulk, who exploded on the scene with 7 TDs and 386 yards in just three quarters of work. It was like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where Butch and Sundance keep asking each other about the man tracking them, "Who is this guy?"
OK, that's it from me for now. I'd drop some more wisdom on the youngsters, but I sadly have a job that requires my attention.

The BYU 52-52 tie (1991?) was a combination of most exciting/most disappointing. The two close home wins vs Cal probably come close in excitement.

How can anyone consider a loss to be the most fun & exciting game they've seen by SDSU? It's not fun to lose

I just remember Cyclops (yes Greek and yes has only one eye) taking his shirt off and doing a scene from Flash dance...Not sure to this day what was worse-that or the missed call... Add the YBU Tie and of course the $C tie (thanks again Andy..)

Yeah, that one really hurt.

At UNR in 2012 was nuts. It was about 33 degrees, but we were screaming and cheering so much it was warm. Great game.

The Aztecs just seemed to score any time they wanted, and the Aggies could not do a thing about it! They won 70-21! The most exciting game I had ever seen at that time for sure! The team ended undefeated and ranked 18th by UPI that season. Too many games to pick just one. That New Mexico State game isn't my number one, but I would have included it on my list. Interesting side note that doesn't show in the state. Brian Sipe threw the 9th TD pass of the game. Coryell pulled him out and put Dennis Shaw back in to the game. Tim Delaney was one TD reception short of the record and Sipe was under orders to pass it to him. Tim was covered in the end zone so Sipe threw it to another open receiver for the TD. When we got the ball back Shaw was back at QB. On the record setting reception everyone in the stadium, including the NM State players new the ball was going to Tim. As I remember it he was covered by 3 players, but Shaw threw it to him, and he caught it anyway. My number one would have to be the game against North Dakota State 11/5/66. We were ranked #2 College Division and NDSU was #1. They had a long history of being at the top of the College Division teams. The game was moved to Balboa Stadium. A sellout crowd, including me, witnessed what I consider the most perfect game I've ever seen the Aztecs play. We beat them 36 - 0 to win the National Championship. Another game high on my list of most exciting was against Southern Mississippi on11/9/68. They were a big step up in class for us. They had beat Mississippi State of the SEC and only lost to Alabama by 3 points earlier in the season. It was reported that their fans and/or coaching staff were apologizing to our fans the night before game for the fact they were going to have to run up the score to calm their fans after the close Alabama loss. The final score ... 68 - 7, Aztecs win. There was the game against Florida State on11/19/77 which certainly has to be included. They were ranked 13th. The rumor before the game is that the winner would get a bowl bid. This was another near perfect game by the Aztecs. We won 41 - 16. Sadly FSU got the bowl bid anyway. I could list many more, but I'll stop here for now. These are games that predate a lot, maybe most, of the AztecMesa members, so won't be on most lists.

Southern Mississippi had just beat a ranked ol Miss and came in a 17 point favorite. Their triple option and defense were special. The first play Fred Dryer forced and then intercepted the pitch for a TD. Aztecs set numerous NCAA records on offense and won 41-14.

For me last year's Las Vegas Bowl was the most exciting. I thought we might be in trouble in the first quarter. All of Marshall's games were exciting. Last year's Cal game. BYU (tie). A lot of games have been exciting.
