I introduce this topic with the assumption that SDSU will not be able to play in the Q indefinitely.
Of course, the worst worst case would be that SDSU might wake up one fine day to realize that they have no place to play football. But short of that, what is the worst that might conceivably happen? It seems to me that those who care nothing for SDSU football, and nothing for the fate of SDSU as an institution, might be able to take charge of the MV property for the sole purpose of building condos, restaurants, and parking lots. The Aztecs would have to look elsewhere in that case.
Were that to happen, what could SDSU do to prevent the cancellation of Aztec football? Might the school find some other place where, at the very least, it could build some sort of temporary stadium? Maybe a bare-bones stadium seating somewhere between 20K and 30K? We can easily imagine the cries that would go up were that possibility mooted by the school. The school could tell the public that such a venue would be only temporary and that the only other alternative would be program cancellation. But that would comfort the critics only if the school could make a believable case that a permanent stadium was in the works and photos of earth-moving equipment working on a new venue would be published any day now.
What if it turns out that even such a temporary solution might prove to be impractical? What happens in that case? I would think that the answer is, somehow, to get Petco Park to allow Aztec football to be played there. For how long? Who knows?
Not a good plan, but better than accepting the end of Aztec football. If you think that losing the Chargers makes San Diego look small time, imagine the humiliation of having the nation conclude that this is such a hick town that we can't even find a way to way to save our flagship college's football team!
I am, at this point, but optimistic. Hope I'm wrong.
AzWm

Worst case:
Westview high school.
Holds around 15k. Half the size of soccer city.
Best case:
Renovated q
Most likely
30k soccer stadium
5k seats on grass 3k can't see cause football players stand
And
Much higher ticket prices.

32k joint use stadium. Worst case.
40k stadium where we get revenue from all events. Who cares if it is shared. Best case.

But, then, neither do you. Here's how I see this issue. It's no laughing matter. With the school's president half way out the door already, and with big money people who are in essence working against us, I think this program may well be in trouble. I hope we don't have to beg for permission to play at Petco, even for a season or two. But honestly, it doesn't seem to me that playing at Petco is unthinkable. Again I point out that the alternative could, conceivably, be the death of Aztec football. AzWm

Is there enough space to build a stadium on the grass area On the east side of Viejas arena? Couldn't it be funded through bond sales?

Is there enough space to build a stadium on the grass area On the east side of Viejas arena? Couldn't it be funded through bond sales? Every time Erik and I walk past that area on our way to Viejas, I suggest to him that it could be a site for a stadium. Erik will have none of it. I wonder, though. AzWm

AzWm I keep saying that they would have to blow out the buildings to the north and possibly east of that site to make it work. It isn't impossible to do that, but they'd have to build replacement buildings for them somewhere else on campus as well as the stadium. That would be closer to the trolley station, so it wouldn't be a bad location at all - just difficult to pull off. It's certainly worth looking at, though, as a fall back plan.

It would take a decade or longer to get the EIR and NIMBY's lawsuits through court. Main campus is possible but not likely.

Is there enough space to build a stadium on the grass area On the east side of Viejas arena? Couldn't it be funded through bond sales? No, not likely because that is part of the hillside where the Old Aztec Bowl east side is. It is very narrow. Your living room probably is wider than that area. *My idea would be to take down just the upper seat section of the Q, Bring your lights down lower also, add extra field level seats in order to make them close to the field. Redo the interior, and exterior of the stadium along with snack bars, eating areas & restaurants, and of course beautiful new suites, and restrooms. All that I bet could be done at a far lower price than any completely new stadium, and you would still have seating capacity at around 50K. May be a little more, and you would be set with a custom fit stadium that would fit your needs when you do go to a larger conference without all the expense!

Renovation of Balboa stadium and put back in natural grass and lets just play there. Screw those dirty "Soccercity investors" They don't give a crap about SDSU.

This has already been addressed by SDSU mentioning that Balboa Stadium is the most logical choice and worst case scenario. There are feasible ways to increase the seating there at Balboa to accommodate SDSU in the short term. Again, this is worst case scenario but they have mentioned it before.

It's real simple.
Get with Doug and renovate the q.
Let Doug be the master developer.
Build sdsu west.
Why is this so hard?
Why doesn't sdsu get on its big boy pants and fight like a man for what is theirs.
