Disagree, and even if that's the case we're better off having him come in, see how well he develops for a year and then re-evaluate. If he doesn't develop and it looks like he won't play much, AND if we're able to recruit above him, THEN encourage him to look elsewhere.
This may be better for HIM - gives him a chance for more PT w/o transfer, but it is NOT better for us.
Bigs are a crapshoot - some don't develop and some surprise. He's a 6'9" athletic big with raw talent. If you have them in the house you definitely want to see how well they develop, especially for our needs.
This means we really need to get someone off the senior transfer wire next year or we're heading into '17 with major growing pains inside. Or we need Narain to reclassify, badly.

With this move, I assume there is a contingency plan. Either another talented HS big off the radar or a 5th Year Senior transfer waiting with his "standby" ticket?
Oldie Out

Trust me he can not shoot free throws or do anything on offense so we do not need him taking up a roster spot.We want NBA Talent big men or NBA d league at least this guy is neither.

Skyler & Chol can't shoot FT's either, but we NEED them. We recruited this guy FOR A REASON. He has talent, whether you want to believe it or not. If we didn't like his skill set the time to encourage him to go elsewhere is March/April, NOT July! He's highly regarded, athletic, and has the potential to turn into a very good player. He's raw, but in his tapes you can see someone who can easily develop.
You can teach offense; you can teach FT shooting; you can add strength. It's much harder to teach height & athleticism, and any time a kid who's 6'9 & is described as "fluid" and "runs like a deer" and "explosive" and "outstanding athleticism" - that's someone you want.
We may WANT NBA talent in the post but that doesn't mean we'll GET NBA talent in the post. I'll take a Skyler Spencer ANY DAY. When it comes to post players role players are key as well.
Heading into 2017 we're going to want experience in the post. Right now, we're extremely thin & limited, and losing BJ only makes it worse. Even if we land Cage we still would have wanted Jones. Even if Stanbeck & Cage we'd still want Jones. This puts a lot of extra pressure on 2016 recruiting, whether HS or via transfer. It's not like we needed open scholarships.

SDDOUG I understand what your saying but I am more comfortable with a better player next year then a redshirt this year.

SDDOUG I understand what your saying but I am more comfortable with a better player next year then a redshirt this year. Again, 3 points: 1. There is NO guarantee we'll recruit a "better player" next year 2. A lesser sophomore with a year of experience is often better than a more talented FR with no experience 3. You can have BOTH. You could have BJ with a year of experience, see how well he develops and THEN see if you can recruit over him.
Having him on the roster this year does not take away from recruiting a better player next year.
Now we have no one in the pipeline, which is not a good thing. We need Narain in this year, not next.
We'll agree to disagree.

We could have had both you mean Jones is gone.Cage should be here with Narain and now we can maybe get Kone who is better or a fifth year transfer or two.

It will work out for the best for both sides. The star of that Lanwdale team was Metu. I agree. I was so disappointed in his play at Torrey Pines last Winter. He wasn't even in the game during "crunch time", couldn't create his own shot against the 2nd best defender on a high-school team and didn't run the floor hard. I was resigned to him getting better under our coaches but had no hope for him contributing anything his first or maybe even 2nd year. I'm sure he's a good kid or he wouldn't have gotten offered. Wish him the best but excited about the next Aztec.

No, what I meant by "we could have had both" is that we could have had Jones THIS year, see if he develops AND STILL recruit over him with better talent. If we get enough commits this summer/into fall, then next year he'd leave anyway opening up space. It's rare you fill a class with 5-6 Grade A recruits.
Yes, we could sign Cage, we could sign Narain; we could sign Kone or even Stanbeck, and even a 5th year transfer. Or we may NOT sign any of those 4 HS guys. We simply don't know, and we definitely don't know if we'll land a senior transfer who could step in right away in '16-17. Too many unknowns. IMO Kone will end up at Cal; Stanbeck was leaning elsewhere I believe and Cage is no gimme (& I'm not sold on him). Having uncertainty is fine if you have 1 or 2 already in the system; not when you're short on bodies.
Again, losing a guy in March, April or May is fine. Lots of movement. Losing someone in July a week before they're supposed to show up on campus - not so much. Hopefully the staff has a rabbit up their sleeve right now, but IMO this is a tough loss.

We must not have had enough space on the roster for another "religious" figure.
We have a Pope. A good Sheppard. An Angel(o).
We have even had a Mohammed.
There may not have been room for Buddha.
Bottom line is that I trust Fisher and staff.

Ziegler doesn't paint a pretty picture of Jones, Aztecs helping him with academics, a possible prep school contact and passing on bigs in the transfer market, only for him to finally pass his SAT and ask for a release. What gives Buddha? Playing time is earned and there are many minutes in 2016.

If he actually is released I would block MWC and PAC12 schools, let him play in the WCC or Big Lots if he doesn't want to be an Aztec.
