If Vaughn was not injured Rebels could have beaten the Aztecs at Vegas at least once if not twice . They are going to be very good , especially if Wood returns . Last year they lost because they ended up with only 7 or 8 players, not going to happen this year. Did watch Zimmerman play in All star games not the quality of the other top 10 recruits but more them enough to be strong in the MW . Their front line will be incredible . As mentioned BSU will also be strong contender for the championship . If the Queen had family jewels she would have been king

Their 3, 4, and 5 will be Okonoboh, Dwayne Morgan, and Zimmerman.. plus they have the #3 SF in the class this year Derrick Jones and the top 100 PG transfer from Rutgers. They'll be more stacked than they were last year, but we'll see if they can put it together and be a good team Great front court, but I can easily see this going really bad for UNLV. Only so many shots to go around, and all these guys will want to have theirs. And if Wood comes back, you can bet that he will have 15 attempts per game. Someone wont be happy, and knowing Rice, he won't know what to do.

Yet another offseason "ZOMG, UNLV!" thread. As long as Rice is coach, they don't concern me much.

Same thing that happens with most teams if you are winning then sharing PT is not that bad , part of the game , and guys are happy producing . Start losing and guys start checking out .

And lands Zimmerman a 5*, 7' Center. Why can't SDSU get these type of players? The same reason why 340+ other schools don't land 5 star recruits. You don't see gorgeous models dating guys that are only average looking and make $50,000 a year. Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina = handsome and earning 7 figure salaries. The rest of us = ugly to above average looking and on food stamps.

I don't want to suggest something nefarious (well maybe I am), but I honestly believe something odd is going on at UNLV. I get Vegas may have a certain allure for some recruits and Zimm certainly has a tie to the city, but this progam has SOOO many reasons to avoid it if you are a top 25 recruit and have top tier programs offering you a spot.
1) Dave Rice looks to be in danger of being fired each year (unstable coaching situation) 2) 2nd tier conference 3) Haven't' won the conference in 15 years (have been to the tourney several time in that period though) 4) Half the team leaves each year 5) Seems to be a general sense of discord in the program year to year
Something just seems odd.

Former Rutgers and Florida guard Eli Carter will visit UNLV this weekend according to Jon Rothstein and Jeff Goodman.
Carter is 6-foot-2 guard that has one year of eligibility of remaining and could play right away for Dave Rice in 2015-16. Last year in Gainsville, Carter started 17 games and averaged 8.8 points per game on 36.2 percent shooting.

Findlay is one of the best Prep schools , so Mays plays there , can check out the Rebels , who could have a very good team >But Findlay is also looked at by a wide variety of other colleges , if he gets a better offer he could easily go to another school if they offer .

Glitz and glamour for a year or two , then they get guys drafted by NBA teams . What many HS recruits want.

Glitz and glamour for a year or two , then they get guys drafted by NBA teams . What many HS recruits want. .....or become disillusioned by the utter lack of direction emanating from the head coach, transfer out in bitterness, and hope for the best from their new school. It's about 50/50 on those two scenarios.

Sounds like he was interested in getting a master's degree. Unlv probably said, "master's degree? Of course this is the place. It's like 102 degrees right now."

And lands Zimmerman a 5*, 7' Center. Why can't SDSU get these type of players? Like some have said Rice recruits very well, and it is a little easier to do at a college that has already won a National Championship in basketball (25 yrs. ago. Has it been that long already?). Recruits look at that, and figure that they can make it happen again. After we win one it will be much easier to bring in the top of the line recruits.

Sounds like he was interested in getting a master's degree. Unlv probably said, "master's degree? Of course this is the place. It's like 102 degrees right now." Zimmerman was in our backyard. Findlay is in our backyard. Vegas is the AAU capital. It's pretty easy to get the fans out there to support (In a NON UNM hotel camping manner) Plus UNLV does have some branding to the parents and coaches. The kids buy into it. Then Mendenhall Center is a national level basketball facility. Aztecs are still doing well. Probably get even better with the facility and continued success. I think a huge problem with UNLV right now is that people associate all the recruiting success to Rice..which is why they continue to believe in him. Mendenhall Center was just finished when he was hired. Kruger hardly actively recruited. A new legitimate HC hire would do wonders for UNLV. Even if the recruiting dropped slightly...having a proven coach will overshadow that. Eli Carter would be dumb to come here for his last year of eligibility. We already have about 12 guys who think they'll see the floor. Don't be surprised if you see a couple in season transfers. Rice has a tough task ahead of getting this team to gel...which he hasn't successfully done in his first 4 years. With another mediocre season he won't be here anymore. I'm actually surprised he talked his way back in this year. Another year without a MWC championship or even 1 and done in the NCAA with all the talent he has to use...even the last die hard Rice loyalists will give up on him.
