Did you skip last season? Aztecs made 20-25 field goals in MWC games even though 13 of the attempts were 40+ yards. In addition, the Aztecs were the only MWC to be perfect on extra points. Did you see my smiley? Oldie Out I see, you were saying: Remember last year at this time when we were so worried about making field goals but that turned out to be a strength last season. A lot of our current concerns are like that stressing about field goals when they are already answered - like quarterback. We will probably look back at smile at those concerns after this upcoming season. I don't know how I missed it. The smiley was right there.

I want good Qb and WR play. And a kicker who won't miss a chippy with a game on the line. It would have been easier if the coaches has positioned him to the center of the field instead of going left and leaving Hageman with his nemesis, left to right. When you are definitely going for the short field goal, you position the run to the center of the field. I'm still steamed about this basic of Football 101.

Distilled like some of the Whiskey consumed by posters here following some of the efforts witnessed last season that had to make you think: WTH was that?

Goals 1) no more Bob - accomplished 2) QB with proven track record - accomplished 3) OC with common sense - TBD 4) HC that overrides OC w/o common sense - TBD 5) Dominant Defense - TBD 2 down, 3 to go I came into last season deciding to take the high road with what I thought were reasonable goals for a program that I had pretty much written off, (still can't believe I flew from ATL to SAN for every home game over consecutive 3-8 seasons, what a dope. But I digress). Simply put, win 10+ games and play in the Las Vegas Bowl, how the 2015 edition gets there is of no consequence to me. I'm hard pressed to believe the program would be playing in a better bowl. For a mid-level program in a mid-level conference, given this is San Diego, this really shouldn't be that hard. You'd think. Failing that, it will be interesting to see if the "enablers of bad behavior" and the apologists can once again justify Long's continued employment.

There is no goals under Rocky Long? Every-time you ask Rocky for timeline on when his team will start beating P5 teams on a regular basis he gives you a BS line like "the defense is improving every year." Expect another 6-5 record under Rocky Long. Then next year he will use the excuse that he needs a defense of coordinator to take some of the pressure off him. I don't think Rocky understands that the HC at G5 school has to be a great salesman (tickets), GM. recruiter, motivator, and good with media. Mr. Negative (cough, cough, Rocky Long) couldnt sell a bottle of ketchup for $.50 let alone for $100 dollars. Telling the media every week that his team "stinks" is a reflection of his coaching staff. #No more excuses#

He annoys the hell out of me sometimes, just like everyone else, but lets keep this to reality/facts. Bottle of ketchup for $100? Are you drunk or just making weird jokes?

I have very little expectations with Rocky at the helm. We will win all of the games we should except for 1, we will win no more than 1 game against a good opponent, we will not win our division. I don't know why you are so sure we will not win our division. I think we will be favored to do so this year for the first time. We are in great position. We are so close to having won it 3 years in a row. I know 3 years ago there were no divisions but we were 7-1 in conference - so I went with that. Two years ago we were a 26 yard field goal away from winning it. Last year we could have easily won at Fresno State with a little better luck. There was a very bad call on that blocked punt and having a QB injury with a freshman replacement who wasn't nearly ready to play. Fresno State really lucked out 2 years in a row. Think about how little would have to change to make us division or conference champs 3 years in a row. Considering that, why should we not be confident in winning the thing when we will be favored to do so for the first time?
1. Win at least 1 of the P5 games. 2. Win our Division 3. Win the MWC championship game. 4. Play on New Year's day. Those should be the goals for the season. I lot of the numbered goals in the first post of this thread would be greatly aided by achieving the goals stated above. The blocked punt and at least 9 other bad calls that went against us per the league office. So yes, we could have easily beat Fresno State.

I believe the stated goal of the team and Rocky Long every year is to win the conference (#Win20) & I'm pretty sure the secondary goal of the team is to win every game on the schedule (P5s included) ... If we do that, we should be playing on New Year's day (goal #3). Our defense will keep us in games, so it's up to the offense to get us the wins.
As a fan base, our goals should be to support the team and show up to games ... of course, as a fan base it is our right to complain when we don't achieve those goals

Basketball has ended for this season: a game or two sooner than we would have liked. Baseball seems to be going better than usual: a pleasant development. As to the other spring sports, I cannot comment, not having enough information. So that leaves football. A while back I read (it may have been linked here) a proposal drafted for the improvement of Wyoming football. It was the product of people who were looking seriously at what could be done to strengthen Cowboy football. It contained specific goals to be reached. I think S.D.S.U. should likewise have such a plan. I know that there has been mention of goals coming from the administration, but I'm not sure that plan's specifics have been made public. Here is what I would suggest. Please feel free to correct me where I am wrong. 1) Most important; contend seriously for the conference championship on a yearly basis. That means either winning the title or finishing second at least 7 our of every 10 years. 2) Continue to schedule P5 schools, but predominantly on a home-and-home basis. Schedule single away games against P5 schools only occasionally, and only if the guarantee for such games is significant (this basically to help the program's bottom line.) 3) Win half those P5 games. (Beating P5 schools only about once a decade is worse than not playing such schools at all.) 4.) Finish in the Top-25 at least 50% of the time, and perhaps only once a decade out of the Top-50 (as indicated by Sagarin and other rating serices; in other worse, do not have periods when the program is pathetic). 5.) Improve recruiting to the point at which the team is not caught with nothing but raw freshmen or mediocre transfers to man QB and other critical positions. 6.) Increase home attendance so that seldom do fewer than 30,000 fans actually attend games. 7.) Hire the best coaches possible. That means ones who have proven their ability to achieve success leading programs at Division I schools, be they FBS or FCS. 8.) Make it clear to new head coaches that they will not have an unlimited number of seasons to prove their worth. For instance, it should be required that by year 3, the teams will have won more than half its games and earned a bowl inivation. Additionally, it should be understood that consequtive losing seasons will in most cases be grounds for dismissal. I realize that some will consider these goal to be unrealistic. My response to that is to say that settling for anything less amounts to accepting mediocrity. That's what happened in the 2000s. Actually, we accepted worse than mediocrity. The program may well not be capable of survival if we do not demand high standards. AzWm How about "Dont lose to Navy on our home field"?

In addition, the Aztecs were the only MWC to be perfect on extra points. I like our kicker. The BIG problem that left a sour taste in all our mouths about the kicking game last season, was not having a COACH decide to RUN the ball when you have arguably the leagues best running game, with a pocket full of time outs, needing to CENTER the ball for the kicker instead of giving the solid kicker the most awkward angle to kick a game winning field goal in a bowl game. Give me a coach who can make THOSE junior varsity no brainer decisions in the crunch time.

The program may well not be capable of survival if we do not demand high standards. AzWm So if I'm reading this correctly, the proposal is to have good coaches, win games and draw fans? They are not proposals, they are commitments to be made by the administration of the university. This is a two-step process. Step one is make commitments in the form of specific goals. Step two is to take actions required to achieve those goals. Obviously, no college president would be angry or disappointed should his school's football team win a championship. But not all university presidents are willing to commit the resources that are essential for winning championships. As regards S.D.S.U., I am still not convinced that the school is completely committed to a first class football program. AzWm

All wonderful goals, but they are meaningless. What is necessary to attain those goals might be meaningful. One doesn't win 10 games a season by saying that that is a goal.
Quite so. But if one does not make a commitment to do something, it is unlikely that the desired goal will be reached. It's not enough to say that you want to lose weight; you must commit to exercising more and to eating less. Believe me, this is a reality that I myself know all too well!
Whether the goal is reached depends on how much we follow through with concrete actions, but those changes in behavior (exercise, eating less, staying sober, painting the kitchen, etc.) are not likely to be made in the absence of an initial commitment. With respect to college administrations, there are many competing interests. The chemistry department wants a new lab. The performing arts department wants a new theater. The computer sciences department wants new computers. And the intercollegiate athletics department wants new locker rooms and expansion of the football stadium. It's not an easy call, largely because there is never enough money to please all the university's stakeholders. The one thing that S.D.S.U. can do even with limited resources is to plan intelligently. The hiring of Tom Craft and Chuck Long when there were better candidates we could have gotten indicated an administration that was disinterested. One of the characteristics of a commitment to winning football is a president who is knowledgeable enough to know that a JC coach was not a good hire. Another sign would be a president who keeps track of our wins and losses and how we stack up with other schools in our conference. Such due diligence should lead a president to change athletic directors if it's obvious that the current one is not up to the job.

So let's hire Urban Meyer. Surely you are not suggesting that there are no other possibilities. Must we choose from just two options; (A) Either stay with an okay but not superior coach or (B) pie-in-the-sky talk of hiring one of best (and most highly paid) coaches in college football? That's it? No third way? Again I remind you of what a couple of our conference partners did. San Jose State hired Mike MacIntyre, who produced a Spartan team with the most wins since 1940. Fresno State hired Tim DeRuyter, a coach who has done pretty well with the Bulldogs, including beating us three times in a row. We will know whether Dr. Hirshman and AD Sterk are serious about making the Aztecs a frequent Top-25 program by the quality of the next HC. Actually, all I ask is that the next guy is as solid as Brady Hoke. AzWm
