I believe that the AZTECS will be great next season. Point guard will work itself out, we have options. The keys to another MWC championship run will be....in no particular order:
If Z can play good D-I defense early on.
If Sky can give us 7+ points a game. (could be as easy taking a couple more shots and/or making some free throws)
IF Pope can improve on his team defense from this year.

Ha ha ha... are we already calling for a Final 4 run? Wow! Can we at least allow them to open and dedicate the new BB facility before we go batsh%t crazy with wild expectations for next season? Thank you! GO AZTECS!

I believe that this next seasons team could be the best ever. I believe they have all the parts to make the final four and could be a history making season.

I think something very similar to this statement was posted last year as expectations were riding high based upon the 4 freshmen in SDSU's recruiting class combined with Angelo Chol. I could be wrong.

I really don't factor in freshmen to do much their first season, unless it is a 5 star recruit,(Duke,Kentucky), which we don't have. I base it on the fact that usually there is a great deal of progress on understanding the game and individual skills between the freshman and sophomore years. I also believe that Chol can make a more significant contribution, especially defensively then he did this year, and maybe raise his basketball IQ a few points.Less muscle power and more brain power. Kell, Pope and Winston, if he stays can and will put the ball in the basket. Shrigs should learn to ball fake behind the arc, and take it to the hoop regularly. I see this next team as having more flexibility and more offensive skills then this past years team. And as always a solid defense anchored by Spenser.

O.K. that was just a generalization of posts from last year that were very optimistic. I didn't mean to imply it was you. Sorry!

Had a few games gone differently (Fresno State, Boise x1 or x2) our seed may have been a little different - The tournament is all about matchups. Had we been a 6 instead of an 8, the pathway would have been different. Getting an 8 sealed our fate pretty much.

So agree with you, and on both ends of the floor. Dude is extremely quick, but right now he's playing TOO quick, and I believe the game will slow down for him as he gets more PT & maturity. Improving the IQ is another way of putting it. But ultimately, as the game slows down it gets easier to make the right decisions, and so if he can harness that talent & strength.....
Before predicting next year's results I'd really like to be 100% sure on who's coming back. Assuming Pope, Shepard & either DA/DW (or both) come back, I love our offensive potential & agree the flexibility is going to be incredible. However, although I do believe because we work so hard on D we'll be OK, losing JJ (& even Polee - although not as much as we were without him anyway) will hurt defensively. JJ to Pope/Zylan opens to do to some dynamic play, but you lose the ultimately glue on the defensive end & a big drop. If WS leaves that hurts even more.
But if all return (projected top 8 at least) this will be a fun & special year. SS & WS anchor the D', and major upside on O'. Exciting.
PS. On a side note, I've always thought Chol was HUGE (strong, etc.), but being in NC watching him stand next to Okafor - unfriggin believable how tiny he looked in comparison.

I do think next year we'll be better than this year because we should be playing with a chip on our shoulder. Sure we won a lot of games, went to tourny, shared MWC championship. I think Shrigley and Chol totally have something to prove in the fact that they didn't live up to their hype and totally underachieved. I think Kell played well out of position, I think he'll return to his natural position and quicken up his game by taking off the freshman 10lbs. Malik and Z will gain the 10 lb Kell lost and will pound it inside and play above the rim. Hemsley will provide a slasher point guard we desperately need. AQ was serviceable but didn't have the physical attributes. I think DA will be the energizer and see decent minutes and Zabo coming off the bench. Spencer needs to develop some sort of move to the basket. I think they'll be hungry and exciting to watch. This years team was like watching paint dry, pathetically inept and boring.

One thing is for damn sure, our guard play will need a complete overhaul from what it was. While I watch the guard play of these S16 teams it makes me realize how deficient we really were in that area.

As Zeigler points out correctly . First the players need to decide who is coming back . then the coaches determine who or what the team needs going forward . What the scheme maybe for the offense . Does not seem to the "X " style or the "JJ" style. Is it MP style or hopefully an up tempo style .? If WS does not come back , that leaves two seniors SS/AC , who will need to provide leadership . Also important what Hutson decides to do .

all that has to happen is the aztecs pick up 4 or 5 high school all americans who prefer nice weather and the beach to snow and black ice.

Me too!!! We have at least one lottery pick, maybe more, and a final four at worst. Oh, wait, that was every year for the past five. Relax people. We struggle to win one of the worst conferences in mid major bb. Enjoy summer.

We should have improvement from all the guys who come back , plus add JH ( who is a freshman ,so wait until he gets used to college ball ) . Most of the same highly rated schools will get a good portion of the top 10 HS recruits so can we hold off on the thoughts on E8 or F4 .
