The recruiting services use someone's physical ability and athleticism, not what's between the ears. Yes, they miss on a lot of guys because football is all about work ethic, but usually the higher a guy is rated indicates how high of a ceiling he has if he works hard, because his body/athleticism is superior. Yes they miss, but having higher rated players is better than having lower rated players

But like you said, it is about work ethic. Those recruiting services don't spend time with the kid and see how his attitude is. They don't go to practice and see how is work ethic is and his eagerness to get better and also how well he listens to the coaches and respects them. Those things are how those 5 stars turn into busts and how those 2 stars turn into studs.

JF had NO stars. He was willing to work very hard on his game.

JF had NO stars. He was willing to work very hard on his game. He had stars. Just not with Rivals. Rivals passed on him. ESPN had him at a 3 star. Scout and 247 had him at a 2 star. Plus, bball recruiting is a bit different and much more accurate.

My 16 year old great nephew seems to want a Nobel (Pulitzer et al) Prize for finding an exception to any given rule. Is THAT what these guys are after? Why else would people OBSESSIVELY interject an exception to EVERY stated probability?

When rivals finally gets around to including Holmes in the rankings then we will be number two in the Mountain West . That's based on the points they give for a four-star recruit added what we have now . Big flaw in all this is of course they don't count transfers as recruits . Unless of ocourse at the junior college transfer , and not even always then. Boise State does not get a lot of those guys. The bottom line is really what happens in a couple years to state the obvious. Boise will keep getting QB,s and we will get running backs I am betting in the next couple years we land a four star running back.

I would hope that this year with the J.R and all the other QB's we start to become a school where high quality QB's want to come to . It is great to have a great RB , maybe DP will even be a Heisman candidate or we have a trio of guys gaining a lot of yards and touchdowns . But we are also going to need QB's that can lead the team to last minute victories if needed and become the feature player in the offense . We have had quality RB's the last few years but never won the MW championship out right . That is the most important thing to be know for Winning Championships and quality Bowl game , I believe you end up needing a quality QB to do it.

I for one am really hoping that either Rodrigues or Smith emerge as the clear QB choice. Given experience only, I am expecting it will be Mr. Maxwell Smith.

Spring Practice starts 2/22 ends about a month later , lets wait to here from the coaches . Although Coach Horton , who would guess will make the vast majority of the decisions on offense , has said J.R seems to be more of a versatile experienced QB for the style we may play pass/ run QB . then Smith who seems to be a pocket passer . So that is why they have Spring ball to get some answers with the newer players and coaches .
Not sure if they have said what practices will be open to the public , and when there will be a scrimmage .

A lot of kids pick favorite teams while in Jr Hi.
We are 4+ years beyond being a joke.
We should start seeing higher ranked recruits soon.

Well for what its worth we are now ranked 64 tied with Kansas, after they finally got Holmes in the mix. WE are now ranked higher than Boise State higher than several P5 teams Purdue Iowa State Pitsburgh Colorado,ad Oregon state, higher than ybu as well Of course that does not stop the malcontents. Scrimmage is March 25th. Smith is a guy that has proven himself in the SEC,I think the option is going to wait a year.

Scout has us 66 (so fairly consistent), but behind BSU (#46). I personally trust Scout more on the West coast, but that's neither here nor there.
Above us among Non-P5 - BSU, Cincy, West Mich & BYU, which is pretty damn good company. Then right ahead of us are Wake, Pitt, Oregon St., Purdue, BYU & Kansas. Right below us are Duke, Iowa St, Vandy, and Colorado.
Basically I think that's about where we should be, if not a little above. Solid by anyone's definition. Again, I wish they'd re-rank recruiting classes in September, after we see who qualifies.
After meeting the new coaches on signing day I'm excited to see what we can do. We'll see on Smith vs. Jake, but no matter who it is I believe with Hunky we'll be improved at the WR spot. QK had his issues, but our WR's were as big if not a BIGGER issue, so stepping up how those guys play will help whoever takes the reigns.
Excited it's almost here!

I don't see it on the Athletics site.
