Speaking of sharing our thoughts with the atheltic department, I just recieved this... Thank you for your continued support of San Diego State Athletics. Saturday night, the Aztec Football team had a big win over Hawaii to take over 1st place in the west division of the Mountain West. While Coach Long and the team get a bye week this week, we look forward to the rest of the season as we aim to win the 20th conference championship in our football history. Just as the San Diego State football team has made huge strides over the past four years, we have continued to work at improving our game day experience at Qualcomm Stadium. You can help us continue to grow Aztec football. Below is a link to a short survey on your game day experience. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey so we can continue making Aztec Football the place to be in San Diego on game day. www.surveymonkey.com/s/LWSD3KR What makes you think the SDSU admin is connected to this? Look at the bottom of the questionnaire. It's probably just a sample. Plus I would question the authenticity of something called "Survey Monkey." Since I am skeptical, I would not fill out question #9.

Ditto what Hoobs said about Survey Monkey. Our company uses them on a regular basis for things ranging from opinion polls to focus groups.
On to my original point ... YOU make or break your own game day experience; stop blaming the university, the stadium and everything else that you choose to put before "your" team.
Some who don't support "their" teams during the lean times may not understand this and more frequently experience dejection after showing up for the "big game" and the home team loses to the Top-25 opponent and then it just build upon their pessimism. However, those who can separate having a good time from the scoreboard will realize that (for sports fans) the game, no matter the opponent, the edifice, or the outcome, can have a great day or night with their friends, family and peers, win or lose.

For example, I went to PF Changs for a lunch meeting today. Food is good, but what would PF Changs be without the decore and atmosphere.

Now the next question is can they could find a way to reach out to the bandwagon fans for this survey? They're the ones who bring the attendance numbers up. I suspect the majority of posters on this board are Aztec fans, but would not change his or her ingrained attendance or lack thereof because of this survey, even though they may say otherwise. Ideally it should be sent to the newer attendees. Their input is the most important since they're the ones who may or may not come back.
My suggestion is to ask every fan coming thru the turnstiles if they're a 1st time attendee? If yes, ask them to fill out the survey (one per family) and give the completed survey to an usher who would be instructed to give them a food discount coupon for every family member for the next game.

But you (and most others) likely chose to eat at PF Changs for the food quality. Sure you don't want to dine at a cockroach-infested place, or one full or screaming children if you're trying to talk business or have a romantic date, but when one chooses a place to eat, food is generally the #1 criteria -- like people can choose to enjoy the game day experience as a whole over just the final score. As for the Aztec Club tailgate, I was speaking more of doing your own tailgate. I choose not to go to the "official" tailgates because they don't appeal to me personally (in no way is that a knock on them, I'm just saying that, in general, I prefer my own food, friends, games, music/tv and atmosphere -- and this is part of what I can control in making for a good time. If I don't have enough food or beer, I've ruined the tailgate)

Does athletics have your email address on file? I'm not sure who they chose to send it to, but I imagine it was Aztec Club members as that is where the email came from and most members have have email addresses have opted into emails like this... The average fan would have to voluntarily opt in to emails, or SDSU does not leagally have permission to spam people with things like this. I posted it here because it was a topic on this board that people showed interest in. Doing a survey at the stadium woulb be expensive and take a lot more coordination.

Personally my favorite place to eat is a dive taco place in the beach, but I'm not going to meet clients there. It is perception that creates demand, and SDSU needs to help create the perception. SDSU is an exciting with a rich history and is P5 worthy. Beating a couple of the P5 teams wont hurt, but some of the suggestions in this thread would help in creating the thought in the community that SDSU is something to come experience, just as basketball is now perceived.

But then, I have a great time by living a great time.

Believe me if you are on this board you would most likely (wether SDSU ever gets into a P5 Conference or not) still have just the same amount of fun tailgating and watching our Aztecs on the field. Because ultimately its about our school pride, our team and our community. But thats the root of this post...we all care about our team and want to see Aztec Football be as great as we know it can be. And many of those ways it can improve step beyond our individual efforts as fans in the stands. (Though that needs to step up too)

I don't know why you think this would be expensive. We average about 25k attendance and as I wrote we'd only be targeting the new attendees, not the regulars.

I don't entirely disagree with what many of you are saying, but I also know that some of the best moments of my life aren't ranked that way because of the grand locale I was at, or that I was bathed in riches; it was something simple that evolved into something great because the people involved made it great. I too would love to be a season ticket holder to a perennial Top-25 team in a lavish new stadium, but it it what it is and myself (and plenty of others) will continue to have fun and enjoy it.

I have had a better time with my buddies in SDSU's stands, than being cramped in a blowout game in an SEC stadium, so I wholly agree. Your personal atmosphere is by you and the company you keep. I was speaking more macro, something the TV can pick up. I never had a bad time at an Aztec game, because I would tailgate hard, and cheer loud, and be surrounded by some hot sorors the whole time. I don't know how it would be now that I have graduated

Many of the previous points are correct. Seems to me there has been a general malaise among the fans for years when the football program suffered endlessly with the likes of Scovil, Stolz, Tollner, Luginbill, Craft and Chuck Long. There were a few brief highlights mixed in there, and now that the program has shown substantial improvement, the fan support has been lagging. Perhaps I should be more patient. Putting the student section behind the team at field level instead of farming them out in right field would get them more involved and I don't understand why The AD doesn't do that. Also don't get why so many leave early in the 3rd Q, the Aztecs are competing and winning and some of our players are top level talent that definitely can make the jump to the pros. Oh well, I get to go watch the Aztecs play, ticket prices are reasonable, and have some nice seats at the Q and its not crowded. My seats are behind the team but if Sterk wanted to do as you suggest, I would gladly move to what is now referred to as the "visitors" side of the field. Knowing other Aztecs, I'm sure many would bitch and moan about that but although it might be a bit uncomfortable in the sun for the first half of a couple games, if it would help the team, that's a small price to pay.

I have a great time at the games, I just think they could do a little more to put some decoration on the cake so to speak. Thinks like matteosandiego's banners in his avatar.

San Diego State football just has no buzz. It used to have a buzz. I remember the games vs USC (what an incredible day that was), BYU and others during the Marshall Faulk era where the Q was absolutely rocking for Aztecs games. It could happen again but two major changes would need to take place. 1. We need a better coach who is able to get better recruits. 2. We need a much better quality home schedule, this year's home schedule is simply unacceptable. Build the thing and they will come. Problem is it is hard to build it with zero fan interest.
