I don't think so. The four "prime bowls" you reference are the four major bowls (a step below the playoff bowls) which the Power5 conferences are going to be running (in collaboration with the various bowl committees, of course). As I understand it, the teams that will play in those major bowls will be 7 schools from the P5 conferences and the best of the G5 schools. The best G5 team each year will generally be one with at most one loss. I suppose a two loss G5 team might make it if its resume included a couple of impressive wins against P5 schools, but I'll bet that will not happen often, if at all. The point is that a G5 team, in order to play in one of those non-playoff major bowls is going to have to beat just about everybody. Splitting 4 non-conference games, going 7-1 in conference, then winning a conference championship game will result in an over-all record of 10-3. I just don't think that 10-3 is going to be the best record in the G5 very many years.
The problem is that short of making one of the P5 non-playoff bowls, there just isn't any place interesting to play if you are a G5 school, which is what we are. I don't think that the Las Vegas Bowl impresses too many people. It's better than the Potato Bowl, but that's not saying much.
If the Aztecs want to make a splash nationally, they are going to have to win out or at worst suffer a single loss. The latter would give SDSU a record of 12-1, which presupposes winning the MWC championship game. Now THAT would be impressive. Again I have to ask myself, How close are we to reaching that goal?

One G5 team will get a prime bowl every year. Why not us?
Sure, SDSU may well get into one of those prime non-playoff bowls. I think the program is capable of reaching that level. Sadly, we have seen too many close calls against P5 schools and too many narrow wins against inferior G5 schools lately to believe that getting to the bowl big time is going to come any time soon. To reach that level, we are going to have to knock off a North Carolina or a Penn State and then go the rest of the way with not more than one loss. In other words, we are going to have to have the best year ever in the history of Aztec football.
That's all we have to do.

PS: I would count a 12-1 regular season with a MWC championship and a win over a Penn State type school to be even greater than the undefeated Coryell seasons of the late sixties.
