BTW --- Kawhi Leonard was one of seven L.A.-area players to receive the John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year Award (CIF-SS Div I.) Hemsley is in good company.

Believe TWC Sports Network is going to replaying the championship game he played in either today or Wednesday ? The PG Austin for Bishop O Dowd that beat Cage 's team was very good . Austin is going to BSU to replace Marks , is rated about 145 by Rivals .

Fish, Dutch & Dave watching the game. Hemsley can handle the ball and has made 3 jumpers in the second quarter.

Hemsley can handle the ball and has made 3 jumpers in the second quarter. Gundo, did you watch the rest of it? Any more insight on Hemsley's game? Thanks in advance! I was at the game, my 'brief' review: Just got home from the Damien game... a few thoughts: Damien was the far superior team physically and athletically. They could have done just about anything they wanted to tonight. Which meant for the first 3 quarters jacking up terrible 3 pointers and keeping Campolindo in the game. Damien should have won by 30+. Tough to take away anything really meaningful as far as JH is concerned... he was guarded, for the most part, by a kid ~ 5'4" 140 lbs (soaking wet). JH could have easily scored 40+ if he was as selfish as his teammates were (#23 for Damien had no shame in jacking up terrible shot after terrible shot). A few things that did stand out: 1) JH needs to work on defensive stance. He had no problem staying in front of the Campo guards but he was constantly bent over at the waist and leaning way too far forward. Won't get away with that in college. 2) JH had a breakaway late in the game that was whistled dead at half-court on a ticky-tack touch foul. JH continued the play and flushed it home with 2 hands... it was impressive for a 6'4" guard. He is certainly a fantastic athlete. 3) In the first half, JH was underneath the basket, ran off a baseline screen to the left wing/baseline, caught the pass, did a reverse-pivot/dropstep to square up to the basket and drained the 3. Very solid play and bodes well for the future! 4) In the secondhalf, JH was on the right wing and went baseline to rub his defender off a screen, but his defender fought over the top of the screen. JH flattened back out to the corner, caught the pass and drained the open 3. It was a big-time play and something I never would have expected from a high school team/player. Fish, Dutch and Velasquez were at the game. Had a chance to chat with Dutch for a few seconds at halftime. They'll be at tomorrow night's game to watch Cage play. Got to greet Fish, he was in the concourse on his cell phone, he saw me coming and politely shook my hand as I said "Thank you, Coach".

They also had the replay of the Mitty Game . Ben Kone looked good at the 5/C position .

watched the game, Hemsley seems more of a true point than that what he is labeled as a combo guard. He penetrated and kicked several times for 3's, was able to get to the paint at will, had a pretty nice floater mid range shot. Knew when to slow down the game, forced some highschool stuff, but overall excited to see him play on the mesa.
Very good ball handler, extremly athletic threw down a 2 handed dunk with ease on a fastbreak, nailed a couple of 3's on set plays.
We've had some bad luck in the past on point guards: Lawton, LBF
and got lucky with late additions of: Gay (UC Irvine decommit), Williams (late addition thanks to torrey pines tournament), Thames (xfer), AQ (walk on)
Hemsley looks to be the real deal. Played really well in a state championship game against high school talent. We will see how that translates!
Go Aztecs!

He also did a good job defensively on Kell when their teams met last year.

. Taped and watched JH is a true PG , as pointed out best attributes are those of a PG , looks to pass first to open team mates , can handle the ball , create a shot if needed , can hit short jumper , runner ,missed a few outside shots ( always seemed to short hitting the front rim ). Also as noted plays D , helps rebound and has very good court vision spotting open team mates or creating shots for them.. Hit a 3 or two but not his best attribute. Feel both he and either KZ or DW will be able to be vastly better at PG then AQ / TK . JH and KZ both seem to function better in a faster paced offense, where team mates keep moving , quick passes and going to the basket. Please let TK go back to his natural position. SG , split time with MS .

He had a pretty low turnover rate and the more guys that can handle the ball on the court the better.

yes he improved some of his ball handling skills but at the same time really ruined his scoring , main reason he was brought here . He had one of the poorest stats in FG , 3 point and FT % for any guard on the team. He does not have the natural court vision JH or KZ have , and are needed. It is not his fault he was asked to play PG , IMO not the wisest idea but some coaches feel the need for a "coach " on the court . Need a guy who passes first , can set up others, moves quickly , can create shots for others or themselves . All depends on the style of offense the team wants . We do not have the slow down: X ball screen or JJ style . A lot of one on one , with a lot of dribbling Is it time if we want more offense to use the greatly recruited ,athletic guys , moving quickly towards the basket , faster paced , more movement with out the ball, aggressive forwards / centers . directed by the quick PG. Or stay with a slow down style . maybe a TK style. TK is a scorer from the SG position let him share some time there with MS. The experiments at PG with WS, then TK ,then AQ did not work . JH and KZ are guys that like to move and move the ball quickly . Coaches recruited athletic guys for offense as well as defense , now let them cut loose. There are not many teams in the MW that can rebound , run & score with the guys on our 15-16 roster .

Hemsley's running mate from Damien HS has MWC offers from Utah St, Wyo and SJSU. The kid has some talent... but based on what I saw from the state championship game... he'll kill team chemistry. Never saw a shot he didn't like and never even considered passing the ball once he touched it.

Just happened to stumble on this post as this thread was renewed. This award has been handed out since 1984. www.woodenaward.com/high_school_winnersThe more impressive award is "LA Times Player of the Year" because it includes all divisions - Helmsley, Polee, and Kawhi won that honor.
