The official Republican candidate in NY's 23rd District, as I understand it, holds positions to the left of the Democrat who won. Surely those who chose her could have found someone more moderate. She is for card-check, abortion, the bailouts, Obamacare, etc., etc., etc. AzWm Try again, William. An analysis of her voting record in Albany will tell you that she's mostly voted slightly to the right of other Republicans. God, I do not believe how ignorant you and the other right-wingers on here are about New England politics. The 23 rd is only one of three Congressional districts in New York that is (or was) represented by Republicans. She is pro-chose and favors the bail outs (if you had any understanding the district you'd know why) but she is pro-gun, not surprising given the district and is in favor of keeping the Bush tax cuts in place. In short, she is everything the right-wing hates because she's not "pure". She reflects her district and the right-wing hates districts that don't hold to the right-wing agenda as offered by dicks from the South. There is one thing you and the other right-wingers on here have to figure out - New Englanders (and I include Northern New York in that because most of our families came from New England) do not appreciate the South telling them what to do. We don't much care for the South and I grew up with a rather prejudiced view of the South - to be frank, I grew up among a ton of people who believed anyone from the South were total inbred idiots. You don't understand the district because you've never lived there or even visited there. =Bob

Hey, Bob, cut us some slack! I fully acknowledge that I know virtually nothing about the NY 23rd. But I also know that the "Republican" lady, despite the couple of things you mention, was far, far to the left of almost all Republican voters. And then, when she quits the race, she backs the Dem! Get a clue, Bob!
The issue is not whether Hoffman was a good alternate choice. Obviously, in many ways he was a weak candidate. The fact that he was still able to get 45% of the vote and the nominal Rep. got only 6% tells us something. I repeat what seems obvious. No array of national figures could have caused nearly half the voters in that district to vote for a weak candidate simply because he fit some folks' idea of a "true conservative." Only when faced with an official Rep. candidate who was such a shallow Republican that she turned on "her" own party could the voters have revolted as they did on Tuesday.
It will be interesting to see what happens in that district next November.

On a day where Republicans can sweep New Jersey of all places and beat a conservative to moderate Democrat in VA by 18%, something went terribly wrong in the 23rd. The middle class voted with the GOP that day in droves but they didn't get all that they should in the 23rd because the GOP screwed up the race - and did so from the get go. There is no lesson to be learned there by the GOP HQ other than to make sure the locals know that their race was obviously going to be a nationally watched battle. So a few idiots appoint a virtual Democrat in this charged atmosphere and expect smooth sailing with no challenges?? Get real. The fault for the outcome falls directly in the lap of the clueless 11. The GOP in NJ and VA got it right, why couldn't the GOP in the 23rd? You have the wrong cause and effect in your argument. Palin, Beck, etc where out of the ordinary attempts that brought the race closer once the challenge was on and the GOP vote split. They didn't blow it for her. She had already burnt her bridges with the local conservatives. She might have won if the race wasn't under the national eye but this wasn't the case. The decision made by Hoffman to run was not a Steele decision. He endorsed the Liberal Republican after the 11 picked her. The Hoffman challenge and the loss in the 23rd was the fault of the 11 idiots from Bumfuque NY. And I will be proved right next year when a more conservative Republican than Scozzafava will win the primary and take back the lost seat. The culprit for the GOP in this case is not Palin or Pawlenty (the two Southerners I guess ), but the 11 or so idiots that appointed the ultra-liberal Republican to be the standard bearer in the first place, especially in this current political environment. They are absolutely out of touch. See, this is what you don't understand because you don't know the district (or the northeast at all, for that matter). She was selected by the party chairs in the 11 counties that make up the 23rd. Something tells me they know the territory one Hell of a lot better than you do. It's quite possible that if a primary had taken place, a more conservative candidate would have won, but I wouldn't advise you to count on it. The 23 rd is probably the most conservative district in New York, but it's in New York and folks like you, who have never lived there, really don't understand how people up there think. The reason I started this thread with an insulting rant about the South was because I know that virtually nobody on here understands Northern New York politics and I knew I'd get the responses that I did. Scozzafava is very well liked in her district. Owens carried Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties and those counties have the majority of population in the district (the rest of the district is rural and most of it is in the Adirondacks). the mistake the right-wingnuts made was assuming that the people there are stupid. Bringing in a ton of right-wing people like Palin, Beck and Limbaugh (yeah, like any of them understand the political dynamics there) was incredibly stupid. And on top of that, they supported a candidate who was barely able to answer any question put to him by the Watertown Daily Times editorial board. What do Palin, Limbaugh, Beck and others know about the concerns of the district? Do they know anything about Ft. Drum? Do they know anything about the St. Lawrence Seaway and plans to expand it? Do they know anything about the proposed highway running east to west from Lake Ontario to the border with Vermont? Do they know anything about the chronic unemployment there and the importance of Ft. Drum? It came down to this - stay the Hell out of local races when you don't know the territory. The idiots from the South decided that because it's a rural district it would fall into line with their religious "values". Big mistake. This was a local race with local issues and the right-wingnuts decided to back someone who apparently didn't have a clue about the issues. And it doesn't bode well for the Republicans if they continue to eat their young. You and they have never lived there and you don't understand the district. =Bob

Figure it out. =Bob You are right in that this is not Montana or Georgia. Folks in those States would never let eleven members of that "small gene pool" constituency put up such a mismatched candidate. I would like to see some school pictures of school classes from back there to see if there are any people with more than an inch between their eyes. Is this "Deliverance" country north? I suggest that you are the one who need to figure it out.

She was not a Republican! She is still, I think, a member of the Republican Party. Too bad she doesn't goose step to the same tune as you or Rush. Then again that is probably enough reason for her to get thrown out on her ear.

I just have this image of some liberal like Barney Frank making a coy little jump when "goosed". Is that it?
