The Spartans won their home opener. That's the good news.
The bad news is they drew a crowd announced as less than 17K and it took a TD with 1:10 left to defeat Southern Utah by five points. SUU doesn't have the BYU transfer at QB that we faced a year ago and his substitute was hurt early and threw just five passes. Nevertheless, the Thunderbirds out-gained SJSU by 80 yards. Oh and for the first time ever, there were no beer sales in Spartan Stadium.
Tick, tick, tick . . .

I was shocked when I saw how poorly SJSU did against S. Utah. Ouch!
The only outcome of that game that would have been worse for the Spartans than a loss was to barely win. And that's what happened. It was especially surprising considering their decent showing the previous week against a name opponent.
However, with such a long football history and the inevitable downgrade their other sports would suffer if they had to join the Big West, I think SJSU is not going to give up without a fight.

Should they drop to Division 2 and try and regroup for a few years? They beat us last.

It is all about recruiting. San Diego State always fires the good recruiters. San Jose State seldom has hired one. Ironically both SJSU and SDSU both fired an excellent recruiter who posted ten win seasons multiple times.

Poor SJSU. They lost to UC Davis, 14-13 tonight. Attendance- 17,844. It was just two years ago they beat us handily in another one of my failed roadies.

CL got beat 2X by not only CP, but by SJSU- by a combined score of 66-20. But I digress. SJSU should just get it over with and end D-1 football. Poor SJSU. They lost to UC Davis, 14-13 tonight. Attledance- 17,844. It was just two years ago they beat us handily in another one of my failed roadies.

Poor SJSU. They lost to UC Davis, 14-13 tonight. Attledance- 17,844. Attledance: I think Al Attledance played point guard for the Warriors when I was a kid. In all sincerity, considering that on a Saturday, Davis is only about an hour and half from San Jose, I'll bet 3-5K of that <18K (or ~20-25% of them) were UCD fans.

Spelling corrected ...and I agree, I'm sure a good chunk of fans were from Davis.

I guess it had to happen. SpartanThunder is now defunct. The guy who ran that board for years has apparently finally packed it in with the loss to UC Davis. One obscure board remains for the SJSU fans who are happy to tailgate and then join 12K-15K of their friends in watching the Spartans lose (to damn near everybody except SDSU ) but those who demand a winning team are fading like flies. Just more sad news from San Jose, unfortunately.

This is the best part of all of this. That board was full of jerks. Led by the guy running it I guess it had to happen. SpartanThunder is now defunct. The guy who ran that board for years has apparently finally packed it in with the loss to UC Davis.

This is the best part of all of this. That board was full of jerks. Led by the guy running it You know, it might be ironic but SJSU fans remind me of the softball team I played on for almost 20 years. Originally everybody had the attitude that we would go out every game and play hard and then whether we won or lost, we would party hard at the local pizza place thereafter. After a decade or so, however, two-thirds of the original guys left for one reason or another and they always seemed to be replaced by guys with a very different attitude about things. One camp wanted to just go out and have a good time, the results be damned, and a couple of them seemed to show up drunk half the time. (Why wait to start drinking until the game is over when you can start before it begins?) Another camp would never go out for beer and pizza and be miserable until the next game if we lost, regardless of the competition and regardless of whether we were down a couple players because of injuries, out of town business trips or whatever. Judging by their two boards, SJSU fans appear to be where my softball team eventually got. That team eventually died a slow death and SJSU football is doing the same.

Not only is SpartanThunder dead, the board which remains is almost so itself: members4.boardhost.com/spartantalk/Exactly one post in the last nearly 72 hours. So for anybody who thinks that SJSU has any possibility of ever joining a new conference with us, please get a clue. The writing is on the wall in huge, bold letters that SJSU football is on its last legs.

San Jose State tried to hang in there but lost at Nevada- 35-13. It was on ESPN-U and I watched it because I have no life.

I have no life either but still didn't watch it. That said, MAJOR props to the Spartans for getting a verbal from this kid: hscalifornia.scout.com/a.z?s=153&p=8&c=1&nid=3877964Look at the schools who have offered and you just have to think WTF? I mean, if he wanted to stay in California he could come to SDSU rather than go to a school which in all sincerity may not even have a football team by the time he's a senior.

Looks like we offered. No accounting for taste. How close to where Mama is going to live? Some people just want to play for perpetual underdogs. Unless she's going to move, I would guess Visalia is only half as far from San Jose as San Diego is and if the young man is being truthful, the professional program he's interested in is a big consideration. Still, to reiterate, SJSU football is in deep, deep trouble. As much as I follow college football, I honestly can't think of another DIA school in the country which is as close to packing it in. Some Spartans will claim that isn't true, that their football program is turning a profit since among other things, they don't pay rent on their stadium like SDSU does. However, anyone looking at it closely will see that after an uptick of about 25% during the three years Dick Tomey was successful, SDSU is now headed like a runaway train right back to where it was before SJSU broke the bank to fund Tomey's contract. And attendance sure as hell isn't going to be helped by the exit from the WAC of SJSU's biggest rival, Fresno State, and Boise State. As examples, the last year SJSU hosted those two schools in 2008, SJSU drew about 5K more for each game than for their next highest attended game. If the NCAA would ever actually enforce its requirement of a minimum attendance average of at least 15K for one year out of three consecutive ones, with the departure of Fresno, Boise and Nevada from the WAC, that fact alone figures to eliminate SJSU as a DIA football program.

It was very nice of Boise State to call off the dogs. 41-0 at the half in San Jose ended up only being a final 0f 48-0. The Broncos last score came with 10:53 left in the 3rd quarter. Attendance- 20,239. I would have thought it would have been higher just to see Boise St.
