After the first couple of years, Coach Fish got our program to a good mid major type of program. Basically either a strong NIT type of program or an early exit NCAA team. Remember, the only SDSU team that has advanced past the first round of the NCAAs was the great DJ Gay/Kawhi/Billy/Malcom team. So we had that great year. Plus the fun rivalry with Jimmer/BYU made for tons of excitement at a sports starved campus elevated the program. Add all the easy to write journalistic hype--Fish and his legacy with MI, Kawhi, Jamaal--has made for a dangerous hype machine that does not appear to be backed up with talent.
Prior to the sweet 16 year, most fans would have more modest expectations for this year's team. The problem is that everyone thought we would be better this year because we lost only Shelton and got some allegedly good new guys. But remember all those close wins last year? We lucked out.
Add to this the toughness of MWC this year and it spells trouble.
Shep is a great recruit. He will probably be a phenom next year. Jamaal is a phenom. Chase is a legit stud. But that's it. And that will not get us into the top ten or so. Yeah, we could probably beat any team on a given day, but on balance, we're just okay. Fans need to recalibrate to the pre sweet 16 era. Let's try to compete for the MWS title and hope for an NCAA bid. That is how things were a few years ago.

Do we have to have one of these posts after every loss?

Add to this the strength of the MWC and you can see the challenge this year. Plus, 9 points in the first half?

was the great DJ Gay/Kawhi/Billy/Malcom team. recalibrate to the pre sweet 16 era. Let's try to compete for the MWS title and hope for an NCAA bid. Yeah, set your goals low - that way you can't fail. Nice. Why does your dream team above only have 4 players? What about Tapley? Why don't you include him in that team?

Last year New Mexico lost at CSU 63-71 and followed that up by losing at TCU 64-83. That was a 19 point loss against one of the bottom teams in the MWC. New Mexico righted the ship and won their next 5 MWC conference games to win, a share, of the MWC title and the MWC tournament. Turnarounds happen. Bad games happen.

Weren't we only like 2 point favorites in Wyoming?
Sure that loss sucked, but why the hell is everyone acting like we lost to Cal State San Marcos?

Please. You guys are a solid team and it wouldn't surprise anyone if you go on tear and rattle off several wins in a row.

Sure that loss sucked, but why the hell is everyone acting like we lost to Cal State San Marcos? 1) 9 pt first half 2) Wyoming basically only played 5 guys the entire game 3) Fresno State crushed Wyoming (at Wyoming) just a few days earlier. 4) We lost by 13. I think that about covers it.

I think that about covers it. In hindsight we're all Nostradamus. Yes, the outcome was horrific, disgusting and two dozen other adjectives you can throw in, but that's fodder for after the game has happened. My point is we were predicted to have a tight (one possession) game by statisticians and metrics (ie Vegas) that are astonishingly accurate at times. All losses may count as one in the right column, however, the four losses the teams has suffered are not bad ones (Wyoming is certainly the 'worst' of the four though). That said, if the captain doesn't right the ship, we may be headed to one or more of those "bad" losses (ie @ Nevada on Wednesday).

My point was that expectations ballooned after the wonderful sweet sixteen season. This was exacerbated by last years incredibly tough, wonderful team that won despite lower expectations. We won a ton of very close games last year. Very gutsy, wonderful--it was a GREAT year. But, the problem is that because we only lost Shelton and Greene and got some allegedly good transfers and a stud freshman that everyone, including me, thought we would be better this year.
I believe we can beat anyone in the country. We should have taken down Zona. That was bad luck. But obviously we can play down to the Fresnos and Wyomings (neither of whom are bad, but we should kill them).
As a big fan, season ticket holder, I am going to choose to have fun with the season but I am not going to be devastated if we don't make the sweet sixteen, which was my pre season expectation.

There were some close games, but lots of total destruction. That team was phenomenal. Only losses were the BYU and Conn. Had a legit shot at the national championship. Last year was so fun because our outmanned team still won a bunch of games. This year, I fear, we look more like the NIT type teams of the early 2000s.

You mean the team that: Beat Cal Poly at home by 6. Beat San Francisco in LV by 6. Beat IUPUI in LV by 2.
