Hoke took over a terrible football team, Rocky did not.

No matter how hard you try, you cannot diminish a conference championship by one loss to BYU in a bowl game. Well if I wanted to diminish our conference championship I most certainly could, and I wouldn't even have to try hard: 1. It was an extraordinarily weak conference. 2. We shared the championship with 20% of the league. If BYU wouldn't have got a bug up their ass, that loss would have meant no shared championship - Fresno would have won it. If SJSU was already in the conference, same thing, no shared title. So basically we needed the one year in between conference set-ups and especially needed Tcu not to beat us a 7th year in a row and we got to share a championship with a Juco and Fresno in a god awful conference.

I want to hear from all those that want Rocky fired about 3PM on 9/7/13. I'm sure you will. SDSU is not going to beat Ohio State. It's a pay day and exposure, that's it. ..Sent from my GS3..

Some of that was my point. We'll never know whether or not Hoke would have continued the drama upwards. But we do know that he came closer to beating a better BYU team 2 years ago (fumblegate) than we did a lesser BYU team last week. AND he came closer to beating TCU than we did last year. See, here I am doing all this woulda shoulda crap that we've heard at SDSU for WAY too many years. Did Hoke win a conference championship? Did Hoke beat a top 25 team on the road? Did Hoke take the team to 2 straight bowl games? What Rocky has done is NOT woulda shoulda coulda - it's fact! No matter how hard you try, you cannot diminish a conference championship by one loss to BYU in a bowl game. You've been banging this drum all year and I'm not buying it! Frankly, I don't care if you do or not. But thank you for your input.

Not sure about needing multiple "phases". Brady Hoke took a moribund program and ran it into a bowl win in 2 seasons. Jim Mora (much to my surprise) jumped into a mess at UCLA and is going to a bowl in his FIRST year. Rocky Long took a successful program and ....and ...and kept it moving sideways. And to me more troubling, with the program now in a more positive light and moving to a BCS conference (even if for only one year) he has not strengthened our recruiting, compared to teams nationally. Not this $#!+ again... Rocky earned silence on this issue this year. This. I was hard on Rocky three months ago, and my objections to him remain. But fairness requires that a man who won nine games and the Coach of the Year title be treated with deference. In the preseason I hoped for eight or nine wins, and Rocky hit my number, so I will let him ride. But that said, we let two very winnable games get away from us, including the one last Thursday. No, SJSU was not a mirage, but we still could and probably should have beaten them. In short, we should have been ranked. Does it really take a generation and millions of dollars and passionate community support and a lot of luck to turn around a college football program? Yes, that's one way. But there's another, quicker way--hire a brilliant coach. What Gary Anderson and Mike McIntyre and Sonny Dykes did the last couple of years verges on the miraculous. How on Earth do you get SJSU into the top 25? Amazing. I acknowledge and respect Rocky's achievements this year and hope he can translate them into a strong recruiting haul (though I hear it's not looking real good so far). But I will always wonder where we would be right now if Hoke had left us early enough to allow Sterk to go get a McIntyre two years ago.

Indeed. Rocky will coach a few years and hopefully we'll have the money and juice to a hire a strong up and coming coach.
