What does he need a car for? Hardly anyone in California drives, public transportation is abundant and convienient. Because he's a freshman in college who probably wants to enjoy the freedom of being on his own. Like anyone else.

I believe he was being sarcastic as in everyone drives in Cali because public transportation sucks.

Well...choosing to look on the positive side of this. At least we get him back for USC and the rest of the season after that. After all, most of us thought he'd be suspended after the weed thing, so in my mind...this sort of creates "a wash" He'll do some time while we get Polee and Spencer some more minutes. We've made it past previous suspensions with Jamaal's DUI, ZO and the stolen TV, etc.
The bigger picture: I hope all these suspension across the country, to so many big time schools, teaches every student athlete to think twice about ANYTHING they're offered.

However, The Bay area's public trans is great. I remember living up there and hearing people gripe and groan about how the bus's would ONLY come every 15 mins. If they only knew what growing up in San Diego could do to a humans morale.

Not a big deal. He will be back in time when we will need him the most. Carry on... Nothing to see here.

I fail to see how this was an NCAA violation unless the cosigner was somehow a booster.

And the Aztec curse continues with early season suspensions.

Every year it's something, and every incoming class has to learn painfully and embarrassingly. Returnees, reminded. Lesson learned for 2012-13. Don't jerk the rules or they will jerk you.

The thing that really sucks is that - I'm assuming - he won't be allowed to practice until after the 3 games. He's going to stagnate until then.

www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/20970590/san-diego-state-frosh-winston-shepard-suspended-three-games"According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the suspension is due to impermissible benefits Shepard inadvertently accepted in September. Mark Zeigler reported that Shepard purchased a car with a loan co-signed by a family he met at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev. After realizing he may have violated an NCAA rule, he returned the car after a few days. San Diego State self-reported the violation to the NCAA, and the university has appealed the penalty. Shepard will continue to practice during his suspension. The NCAA allowed him to play against Syracuse, essentially delaying the suspension."

He got a car for his birthday from his godparents. Compliance freaked out about it and made him give it back, but the school still had to file it with the NCAA. So this is the punishment the NCAA came up with for it Wow. These guys are truly entitled to absolutely nothing in college. NCAA is jacked. You nailed it. Athletes can have absolutely nothing. It is over the top. Things that regular students could get would be an NCAA violation by an athlete. The NCAA really needs to get more realistic. $400 is nothing.

You should read the article, it's well written and addressed the participation, practice and team activities issue. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

He played on the same AAU team as Shabazz, let's hope he is not guilty by association. Evidently a big donor to the program is creating the problems. Well, from what I have read Shabazz got permission from the NCAA in ADVANCE for a friend of the family paying for his trips to Duke and North Carolina for unofficial visits. The problem is with the NCAA. Their rules are not clear, they are not applied evenly or timely, and they are inconsistent and filled with hypocrisy to boot. They fail to define a "friend" of the family. They should just say only family can pay trips. Much easier. Of course, they are so in with the shoe companies how can they complain about these recruits receiving things. It is just that because it is getting out of control the NCAA is trying to make a statement with these recruits.
