If someone offers you an NFL paycheck for a few weeks, might as well take it.

Does KO have a realistic chances to beat out the other Charger backups? It would be great to see him backing up Rivers

They brought in Boller first, but when they told him he was just filling in for Whitehurst and not competing against him, he decided to quit. I'm assuming it's the same for K.O. They just need a practice body until Whitehurst is ready to go. Maybe he'll catch the eye of another team. Who knows.

Does KO have a realistic chances to beat out the other Charger backups? It would be great to see him backing up Rivers 0% percent chance. His only chance would be if he still had practice squad eligibility left, but thats been drained for a few yrs now. Most NFL teams will only keep 2 active QB's and then have the 3rd be a practice squad. So basically it's going to be Rivers & Whitehurst. And then a practice squad guy.

rules changed with the last CBA, no? They basically added 2 roster spots and you have to have a 3rd qb I think. I'd look it up but I really don't care

I'd look it up but I really don't care There is a new rule, but it actually hurts the 3rd string qb. It basically doesnt exist anymore. Prior to the rule change, you were able to dress a 3rd string qb and it not count against your 45 man roster. But he was still considered an emergency qb and if he was used, it deactivated one of the other active qb's. Now, he counts towards the 45. Thats why last year you only saw 2 qb's on the 45 man roster. And the 3rd was a practice squad guy. Some teams carried a 4th qb, but he still was never part of the 45. So most teams find it a waste to have that 4th (non practice squad) qb on roster.

I would have to think if he came into camp very sharp and Norv likes him, he could make the team as the number 3 QB. These practices and games mean something, any football team which doesn't reward merit doesn't deserve to succeed.

I would have to think that O'Connell has a chance to be the backup if Charlie Whitehurst is the incumbent. I live in Seattle and got to see him vapor-lock all over the place for two years. I cannot imagine what the Chargers see in that guy.
Hard to imagine O'Connell being any worse.

If Kevin can stay until a preseason game, there will be film. If he plays well, everyone in the league will know.
If there is an injury later on this year, the practice during preseason and knowledge of playbook/players will increase his chance of coming back.
