It has been several days and I still don't see what this is about. I have not seen him laughing or even snickering. What is the big deal? It is not like he said he was "queer" of something. (1950's term for which I expect flack. Some of us just don't understand.)

I don't think you are a bigot for asking this important question. I think those who accused you of that need to rethink their intolerance.
When you hear gay "pride" or "proud" to be gay, think "not ashamed". "Not ashamed" is not a positive affirmation and therefore a bad slogan. Being "proud" is a positive affirmation and therefore is used instead to indicate "not ashamed".
Thanks for your desire to be educated in this matter. BTW: I am proud to be a conservative hetrosexual.
