LA Times reported this high schooler has been clocked at 100 MPH. 7: San Diego Padres -- Lucas Giolito, RHP, Harvard-Westlake HS, Studio City, Calif. The best arm available before being sidelined early in the season, Giolito is the biggest X factor in the draft. Believed to carry a huge price tag, Giolito's injury may have reduced some of his bargaining leverage, plus the Padres could entice him with the prospect of playing close to his Southern California home. If Carlos Correa falls to #7, that is who we are taking.

Well Tommy John surgery worked out pretty well for Stras so why not. It's not like we are going to need an ace anytime soon anyway. Correa will be long gone so the pitching it probably where we'll head anyway.

No, I mean it was a bad sprain of the UCL. Many times, like Stras, it is optional but maybe it wasn't as bad as people thought.

Appel would be terrific. Anyone know if Stanford kept him on a strict pitch count...or used and abused him?

Remember, these are the same Padres that buy from outlet stores, not Neiman-Marcus. Maybe next year, with new owners, we can afford the real number one pick.

We have to rid ourselves on this cheap label if we want to move up in the baseball world.

Fried has a signed LOI w/ UCLA, in case he doesn't get the right offer.
One scout quoted in the LA Times said he was the best left hander from the southland area in a decade.
Still....he's a high school kid and I would have preferred the more polished college starter.

Appel would be terrific. Anyone know if Stanford kept him on a strict pitch count...or used and abused him? I did a little looking around, and based on what I saw, that might have been a concern... In the two most recent games I saw box scores for (one was a NCAA tournament game on 6/1) he went 9 innings in both, with pitch counts of 109 and 122 (in the 6/1 game) despite being up 9-1 and 8-1. I also got the impression that neither he nor his coach pays much attention to pitch counts. It was mentioned that he has games with 133 and 140 pitches this season. The kid's a great talent, but he may be a ticking time bomb with an overworked arm. (Or he may be a physical freak like Nolan Ryan and it truly doesn't matter...). The Steve Boros representation may have factored into it as well. Frankly, I don't have a problem with the guy they picked. All the ratings had him in the Top-5 to Top-10 range, and most ranked him as the best LHP available. It'll take a little longer to get him to the bigs than it would a college player, and with that extra time there's greater risk of injury along the way, but he's projected as a future #1 starter, so he's definitely worthy of the pick.

... and I wouldn't classify this as a "cheapskate move"... He was picked right about where he was projected to go, and given both the pitch count and Boros issues, may have been considered a safer option than Appel.
It's not as if they reached deep into the barrel to dredge up a Matt Bush. He may be a HS player, but he's legit as a #7 overall choice.

Last year they showed that price was not an issue. They paid first round money to 3 players they drafted well after the first round. The Padres will likely draft a hard sign or two later and surprise folks by signing them, if last year is any indication of their direction.
