amac.us/social-securityI opted out of AARP several years ago when I finally became so disgusted that they worked for and advocated against my best interests. I recently join AMAC and will continue to support them and their causes. They just make sense. This Social Security proposal goes right along with how I have been thinking for years.

Contributions on all earned income, increase retirement age over time, adjust COLAs. That would do the trick.
The idea that Social Security IRAs would be useful is silly. We already have 401ks and IRAs. Adding a third would do nothing. The problem is not not having enough vehicles for retirement savings. The problem is not enough retirement savings. Very few people max out their 401ks and/or IRAs.

That is one of the main issues in the upcoming mayoral election in San Diego although it is not discussed in those terms. Part of my Federal Retirement under TSP is now that way. It is by far the biggest part of the retirement system now and is funded by both the employee and the government out of current budget. No unfunded future liability. The current plan has a modest pension, but it does not amount to much compared with the TSP if you participate fully. Military are now eligible to participate. It is a responsible way to fund retirement programs. |

See my post above this one and see if you would agree about the 401K type feature. It would be especially valuable to a surviving spouse who had been a "Stay at home Mom". |
