If we can develop this line, we can win six or more. If we can not make this line come along as the season progresses, we might be lucky to win five.
In my craw, I have the irrational feeling that this coaching staff will work a miracle with both the Offensive and Defensive lines, and we will win seven.
Why irrational you wonder? Simple, the last two times we had a coaching staff building the lines slowly but surely, they were both fired. Tom Craft had a bunch of Sophomores when he started beating other teams in line play in 2005. Doug Scovil had the makings of an outstanding offensive line coming together when he was fired. Remember folks, it is all won and lost in line play.
Quarterbacks can not pass when they are running for their lives or when they are on their backs six yards behind the line of scrimmage three seconds after the ball was snapped.
Running backs can not gain positive yardage when they bounce off of the Butts of the linemen in front of them who are supposed to be opening holes but instead are getting stuffed.
If you ever want to contrast line play in one season go look at the loss to Las Vegas in 2005 and compare that to the win against BYU in the same year. It was the same kids both times. One time they were dominated and the second they were dominant.
Dominant wins games. I like Dominant. I'd love to see it again at San Diego State. We had dominant lines with Claude Gilbert when we were posting those two 10 - 1 seasons. Lost them for a time when we had to go to high school recruiting. When you go from recruiting the JC's to recruiting from the high schools, in two years most of your juniors and seniors are gone and your team is mostly Freshmen and Sophomores. That really sucks when it comes to line play and that is what cost Gilbert his job. He suddenly did not forget how to coach. He just did not have the size and experience in his lines with all of those underclassmen.
