Definitely a logjam. Hopefully Cashner stays healthy, the stuff is definitely there.

Definitely a logjam. Hopefully Cashner stays healthy, the stuff is definitely there. There has been a lot of moves. The Padres moves to this point has mostly been trading pitchers for hitters. That is something they must do because hitters will shy away from signing to play half their games at Petco Park. Rizzo for Cashner goes opposite that trend but is doable because of the prior trades. Latos and Rizzo For Volquez, Cashner, Alonzo, and some minor leaguers most notably catcher Grandal. This will come down to Rizzo versus Alonzo. And if Grandal is worth the difference between Latos and the other two pitchers. I think Alonzo must beat Rizzo by a bunch to make this work. Volquez was very very good at 23. He could make a comeback here and be very good but the chances are slim that he will be close to Latos.

Don't like the move at this point, could have held out for a better opportunity. Cashner definitely has power stuff, but I just don't see this as enough of a return for what could be an All-Star first baseman. I tend to agree with you. I thought we would get more. I think the Padres see him as a starter. Cashner may turn out to be a good starter. Most of his MLB experience was as a 23 year old relief pitcher while most all of his minor league appearances were as a starter. He was injured last year and pitched very well in relief after his return in September. The Padres could use him in the long relief / spot start role that Stauffer/Luebke/Bass have manned so well over the past 2 years. He may also become a starter in place of the newly aquired Reds pitcher, if Edinson Volquez doesn't rebound from his injury as the Padres hope. The Padres have a lot of options for starters. 1. Stauffer 2. Luebke 3. Richard 4. Moseley 5. Bass 6. Volquez 7. Cashner Those 7 have been reduced to 2. 1. Stauffer2. Luebke3. Richard 4. Moseley5. Bass6. Volquez 7. CashnerIf I had known that when I posted those 7 pitchers in that list, I would have rushed out and placed an "Under" bet, for Padres wins.
