Hi All,
Just wanted to start a thread so we can discuss some ideas on marketing and promotion ideas to fill the stadium for Aztec Games.
Last years "HOKE RULES" was just simply a very dumb campaign.
I mean you need to do promotions, create excitment and get people in the stands. A picture of a fat guy named Hoke that most people have never heard of isn't going to bring in the fans. Explains the poor attendance last year. Anyone who took marketing 101 should have know better. SDSU athletic marketing is just not getting it done.
Here is my first idea and it is sort of what the Padres did last year.
Offer a family of 4, 4 tickets plus 4 drinks, 4 hot dogs and 4 popcorns for $40.00. It will get more fair weather fans in the stands and make the program some money. They should definately do this for the first game of the year.
Hopefully some of the "Smart" marketing people at SDSU will take some of our input.

Big Dog, I believe State does this promo with the UT and it is called Family night. It needs to be promoted better.
I like the Nickel Tickets for Nicholls State. Or buy one ticket, get the second one for a nickel. I like a Neil Diamond Concert at the Q after the Game and one song during Half Time. I like Beach Towel Night I like the jersey Tshirt give away
Conceivably they all should work, but here is the thing, promotions need to be promoted. AKA, the staff needs to get off their ass and hit the bricks and promote the events.

Attn. SDSU Marketing Dept: Look at the economy before spewing off dumb marketing ideas to fill the stadium. Use this template: Oldie Out

They definately need to do something for the "Nicholls State" game but I haven't heard anything and it doesn't seem to be in the works. If it was they should have been promoting it already. They need to get on the Morning shows and on the radio giving away tickets to that game.

This all sounds great, but I had an extra season ticket last year and literally couldn't give it away - and I have a ton of friends. The only way to get more people in the stands - WIN!

Hard to sell ice cream when it is 20 degrees out. Not saying they could not do more but lets be realistic, we have had a rough 20 years.

The article in the paper the other day said 5 dollar tickets for that game; we're still aways away, promoting tickets for a game 2 months away would be foolish.

Actually, my dad ran the Navy Commissary in Maryland (Pautuxant River) and their BIGGEST day of Ice Cream sales was on a day when it was 5 degrees.... ...but the days of random fans showing up for Aztec football are just about over...even if it's $20 for a family. If you don't win, nobody shows up.

I have a great idea to get people in the stands. How about winning something like 9 straight bowl games, like Utah has. I would be willing to bet attendance would average 40,000 a game then. And who knows? Maybe even a few Pac Ten people will come check it out.

Invite different San Diego or regional companies become the presenting sponsor for 1 game each during the season.
For example: Game 1 vs. Nichols State is Qualcomm Night. They buy all of the remaining tickets to the game for a major discount and give them away however they want - presumably through cool marketing gimmicks and donations to military and families in need (so they can write off if necessary). They can also pimp all of the products that they want and do all of the research that they want to do with the fans.
Buy out costs are more expensive for the more marquee games. You might even get more out of companies from out of town looking to target the fans from both teams.
Make the price worth it to the companies for the marketing, PR, and market research opportunities.
Everyone else makes their money on parking and concessions.
Season ticket holders get free meal deal with drinks for each ticket, so that they don't feel ripped.
Think about how much money gets spent by big companies targeting sports fans....look how much was spent by Hollywood at Comic Con this weekend.
There is money out there. Just need to get creative.

would be nice for some Alums that head local business to assist in marketing, or support a promotion, would it be ok for Stras to do a picture signing in October or November. For Nichols St buy 4 tickets for $5.00 each get the fifth for a "nickle" . Get the coaches on the radio shows, as many as they can. Specials for Pop Warner or even youth soccer kickers. - ask the Padres for some assistance. But start working now

If I am a family of 4 and I am looking for something to do on a budget and I can take the family out to an Aztec Game and feed everyone as well and provide some entertainment for $40.00 then I might do that. But $5.00 a ticket then $10 each for a hot dog and a drink for the priviledge of sitting in the nose bleed section in an empty stadium to watch Nicholls State ain't happening. They have to appeal to peoples stomachs as well as budgets.

I know UCLA gives a way the whole endzone to schools for free for a few games; no reason we shouldn't be doing something similiar

Combine that with a battle of the marching bands or some crazy ASB half-time competition, combine with winning, combine with more of that athlete to student outreach Bekays mentioned to get SDSU students coming and you begin to build the youth market . . . as long as you win. Follow it up with very cheap student tickets (high school students). Begin to make the Q teh place to be on Saturdays in the fall . . . as long as we win.

UCLA's program is something like Road to Success or some similar name, and they give away a couple hundred seats to any school that applies and it is either 2 or 3 games and i'm not sure if it's one or both of the endzones, they have a guest speaker and it is a good way to sell the program and the school to middle schoolers (and we all know the males are going to drop 20-30 bucks on food and/or gear), something tells me there is a tax advantage somewhere in there too.
