If I was anyone else the conference I would try to put the target on SDSU's back as well.

Magic used to say "I fear no man but Larry Bird".
That should be just about everybody in the MWC's sentiment re Jimmer.

"All that quite possibly leaves San Diego State as the team to beat in the MWC." ;D This writer makes it sound like we'll win, but only by default. In other words we're intact while the other teams are missing players. What a bunch of bunk.

We have been one of the favorites to win the MW the last 6 years but something always comes up that knocks from champ to 4th place ... suspension, players turns pro early, pain in the ass gets kicked off team, injury, cancer, etc. 09: 4th place (5 of top 8 graduate, total rebuilding year, 4 new starters) 08: 4th place (best player Wade suspended 8 games, 6th man Davis diagnosed with the big C, can't contribute) 07: 4th place (starting C habel kicked off team, back up C shelton blows out knee after 4 games) 06: 4th place (slaughter turns pro early...oh what could have been?) 05: 1st place (arguably the best team we've ever had) 04: 6th place (4-10 in conf. Slaughter and Heath are young and no help...I don't miss these days at all)

That was the year the Aztecs became the only MWC team to ever win an outright regular season title and the MWC tournament. The only negative comment about that year was Abukar not being eligible in OOC play. That hurt our RPI which led to a much worse seeding than we would otherwise have. I highly suspect the Aztecs will be favored in the media poll this year - for a second time.

What about this past season? So, you do not think that the Aztecs have proven a "damn thing?" I beg to differ!
Unless you conveniently forgot, Aztecs are the 2009-2010 MWC Champions! Moreover, Aztecs kicked the Conf Champs and #8 ranked team butt in order to play for the Championship and went on the kick UNLV butt on the home Court to win it all!
Thereafter, Aztecs played a ranked Tenn. team in 1st round NCAA game and lost by 3. In my opinion, Aztecs have proven that they can win and win big! Also, note that the Aztecs did all of this by themselves and win approximately, eight (8) players!
Its okay to look in the past, but I prefer to focus on the present and the future. And right now, Aztecs looking good for the present and the future!

We haven't won the regular season title in 5 years, although we have always been one of the favorites, so national sports writers (who are paid for being right) are going to shy away from picking us until we prove we can? And I've been traditionally realistic, yet optimistic about this program, and while I agree with every positive thing you said about last season ... I'm confused because I think you hold the record for using the word "failure" followed by multiple exclamation points on here ... and now you state that they have proven they can win, and win big but also suggest anything less than sweet 16 is failure? Pick a side of the fence.

I don't think we are failing in any way. A few posts ago I list 4 straight years that had major losses for some reason. If 2 or 3 of those things don't happen we easily make the tourney a couple more years and probably have a few wins.
Every year has had more promise than the one prior. Winning feeds recruiting which feeds winning. Stay the course ... this is great.

we need to be ready to play everygame, we come out too often like $#!+ a couple of times a year against inferior opponents, hell, opponents that we should be able to roll the ball out and beat, yet we lose.

I concur w/monty. SDSU needs to be ready for everygame no matter who they play! Yes, SDSU fails to reach Sweet Sixteen or make a deep run into NCAA's would be failure.
Winning the League Title does not ensure a NCAA bid! In fact, a great RPI (i.e. SDSU 2009 got snubbed) does not ensure a NCAA bid. So, winning the League Title is great, but I have seen teams that fail to win their League Title go on to NCAA's and win the Championship!
I do, however, agree with pokey (lol) that SDSU has yet to make a splash on the National stage. But, that is about change. With all the pre-season hype and recent articles written about San Diego State, Steve Fisher, Kawhi Leonard and etc.., I believe San Diego State is on the National radar.
Should SDSU start off next season like they played during MWC Tourney and 1st Round NCAA game, I like their chances to win MWC League, Tourney and advance deep into NCAA's. I will go on record today with prediction that San Diego State will win their 1st NCAA Tournament game in 2011!
