Looks like he is starting to put on some bulk. Any time you can get this type caliber of player you take him. Russell Westbrook athleticism big hands and wingspan as well.

miner22 ... you keep bringing up kentucky and mentioning that they didn't win it all, as if that made their season a failure and youth and athleticism will never win games? But they had one of the best teams in all of college last year and they lost in the great 8 to a hot WV team that was also loaded with pros (Ebanks, Butler and probably Jones).
I couldn't tell if you were pro or con Powell? But I do agree that too much talent at 1 position will likely lead to transfers, and that's why I see us playing more 3 guard lineups to get the talent on the floor (especially if we get Powell).
And we then need post players who will do the "sacrificing" and the dirty work like rebounding and blocking shots and we are already looking at a couple of guys just like that in 6'9 Ronnie Stevens, 6'9 Greg Sequele, 6'10 Robert Garrett, 6'10 Maxey. None of these players are tremendously skilled offensively but all will thrive while playing with high scoring, penetrating guards.

ALWAYS room for a local stud in our line up with this kind of game. Plenty of room next year. We can make it work. Don't be thinkin' all elite and that he would not be a starter here very soon.

They're not only going to be or are on NCAA probation, despite having a brand spanking new arena which is one of the finest in the country, their average attendance was less than ours last season. So I don't see SC getting anything but second tier kids for the next several years at least. Their self imposed 1 year postseason ban is over, so they're not on probation .. but they still lose another scholarship for 10-11 and already have 3 committed so they just might not have room. Thanks for the update. Even though things may not be as dire for USC as I assumed, they are still bad. These are facts, not opinion: the Trojans' per game average attendance was lower than ours last year; the Pac-10 had a lower rating than the MWC last season; the Pac-10 tournament sold less tickets than were sold for the MWC tournament and anybody who wasn't blind could see for themselves that the actual butts in the seats at Staples Center was two-thirds what it was at the T&M. Bottom Line: It is very arguable that although the Pac-10 is still a better football conference than the MWC, it is no longer superior to the MWC in basketball.

Don't get too cocky though .. we might have been a better bball conference last year and probably next year ... but they have a ton of players coming back and coming in ... they won't be down for long.
even still ... UW smoked NM last year and the pac -10 had a team go further in the dance than the MWC, which is all that really matters to most. The pac-10 will probably get 4 teams into the dance this year which might be more than the MWC will get in.

sleeping giants is right on point about the MWC being superior to Pac-10 in basketball. And I am of the opinion that MWC football is not too far behind. Now, back to the thread. Yes, Kentucky season was a failure! When your team is one of the Top Teams in the Country and team fails to win the NCAA Title, its failure!
I am pro Aztecs winning MWC league, tourney and making a deep run into the NCAA's! I am not into player hype and stockpiling team with my favorite players. San Diego State has had some good teams in years past and failed to win the BIG games! I do know this, the team that controls the paint/boards wins the game. Thus, I am pro big man for the Aztecs and not small guards who may or may not know how to play the game!
Then again, I have no idea how this guard or new Aztecs players are going to respond when they play against players with arms and legs! I guess you could say that you tube highlights and summer league games (where there is no defense played and no structure) does not turn me on. I'll get excited when Jamaal Franklin takes off from the free-throw line and dunks over Drew Gordon, Andy Ogide or David Foster. I'll get excited when I see LaBradford Franklin lock up Jimmer Fredette and Dariese Gary and prevents them from scoring . Powell has yet to commit, so I cannot even think about getting excited about his play.
We'll find out how good he is when his High School team plays Sac. High and their #3 ranked guard in the Country and Robert Garrett. Sure would be nice to hear that Powell takes it to the basket and dunks over Sac's 6'11 Robert Garrett. Powell against Turner should be a good match-up. My prediction is that Powell will commit to a Pac-10 School. Too much heat for him in the MWC!

We still get no respect and the MWC still has much to prove.
Don't let the AP ratings get to our heads. We have a tradition to build first.
Oldie Out

Sign Powell up. You never turn down blue-chippers in your own backyard. He could be in top 25 and play in MCDonald's AA Game by the time of Spring 2011.

Interesting how the preseason top 25 ranking has started changing the perspective of SDSU basketball. Powell mentions it in this article. Winning changes everything. Now, if we can get to a bowl game in FB...

Turner and Garrett are failures (that never won a state title) and Turners hype has been solely generated because of his play at all-star summer leagues (where there is no defense played and no structure). I understand summer league has a different feel of organization and intensity, but if you are a player, you play to win, whether its rec league or an nba championship. The players Franklin are playing against are some of the top players in college and some future pros ... these guys suddenly lose all competitiveness because its summer league?

Where in my post did I bash Franklins and Powell? And where in my post did I praise Turner and Garrett? Personally, I am looking forward to watching JFrank and LFrank play for the Aztecs! Aztecs definitely need a PG that can penetrate, push the ball up the floor and defend. Based on your posts and the you tube highlights, LFrank fits the profile.
According to your posts and the you tube highlights, JFrank is a combination of Kawhi Leonard and Billy White! He can slash to the basket, he can finish above the rim, defend, rebound and score. Aztecs definitely can use a player that fits JFrank profile. I stated that the hype and you tube highlights do nothing for me.
I prefer to see LFrank and JFrank (my nickname for the Franklins will be F-Troop) exhibit their talent and athlecticism against D1 competition. AAU and Summer Leagues are a joke! Basically, its about who scores the most points. Its strictly selfish individualism in its highest form! Believe me when I state that Turner and Garrett are ok players. Its easy to look good when you have no competition and you may be the best player on your team.
Let's see what happens when these young players compete against other talented players and they are not the best player on the team. Personally, I love competition. So, if I am a player on the Aztecs' team, I don't care if the Coach recruits a player at my position that may or may not be better than me. I would welcome the challenge! The point of my post was that I would rather here that the Aztecs are recruiting some BIGS because that is what the Aztecs will need in 2011.

Aztecs are getting respect locally and nationally. When BYU's, Jimmer Fredette makes a statement to a sports reporter that San Diego State is the best team in the MWC, that's respect!
Now, San Diego State has to come out next season on fire and live up to their lofty expectations! Pre-Season buzz is just getting started. It is my hope that the Sports Publications that come out in the Fall feature the MWC Players/Coaches instead of the Pac-10. I am sick and tired of picking up Sports Publications about West Coast basketball and Pac-10 teams are always on the cover. MWC and San Diego State should be on the cover!

We really dont know how to react to such lofty expectations and rankings in basketball... its never happened around here before! I know that pre-season rankings dont mean a thing, but it would be HUGE for our program. Every news and media outlet around the country will have the Aztecs listed in the pre-season top 25 (assuming we are ranked to start the year). Get off to a hot start and expect to stay there most of the year. We need that kind of recognition.
Its very hard to play your way into the rankings when you are not a household name. Get in there early and stay there. Especially since we have a huge recruiting class ahead of us, the more pub, the more pull we have for next year's recruits.
