Reading an article today on ASR regarding the recruitment of Jordan Smith (OL) this year, and the coach they are speaking to mentions 2 things: 1) Kids and coaches love Hoke and his style. He's very easy to talk to and enthusiastic about the direction of the program. 2) The Aztecs were on him (Smith) early because of the recruiting of Jordan Thomas from last season, and they were consistently around and stayed on top of Smith. I'll agree on both of these points as I have had the opportunity to talk with Coach Hoke on one of his visits to our campus, and he is just really easy to talk to, and yes, he is very enthusiastic about the program. As for an Aztec presence on campus, as I have said elsewhere, Sipe has been to our campus multiple times since being on the job and we had 1 borderline prospect IMO. The previous staff did not visit us once during their time on the Mesa. if i remember you are out in el centro? So it takes a bit of commitment to drive out there for a visit. I think Yuma playsin the same division as the scottsdale schools we get some recruits from and is often in the semis/finals - do you know if we recruit there as it isn't much further from el centro to yuma Yes it does take a commitment to be out here at 6:00 in the morning to observe a lifting session as Sipe has done on more than one occasion. I don't know if he covers Yuma or not. I know we gave him some tape we had on Yuma as the HC there felt he had some D1 players there last year.

What I like most is it shows a game plan/concerted effort by the staff to cover everywhere they can, it isn't like he's just driving to campus and stops off at rancho bernardo or something. I went to school in the la area, and my junior year we had some D1 talent, but not so much my soph or senior years - the coaches were all around for one specific player but really never around after or before. The big boys at the time: notre dame, snider at ASU the year after the rose bowl, nebraska, etc all made a run at a specific player, but he was a world class shot putter and UCLA already had a connection with him through that and the others never had a chance; and I think the handful of guys that have gone D1a since then have all gone to UCLA partly because they were around more than most and built a connection with the coach even as staffs have changed. It is good to know they are making appearances with what appears like a systematic effort to canvas the area.

Just wondering because you hear or read a lot of that from around county schools. Nice to hear that our current staff is working hard, gotta love that.

Arizona Western College out there on the other hand usually has a few quality JC guys.

Really have no idea other than perhaps they were just not real familiar with the area. We would get one call from the DC or OC each year asking if we had anything to look at and that was it. Coming from the schools they had coached at, I know they understand the recruiting game, but they were just never real visible to us. It is night and day different so far with this staff. Sipe has been to our campus at least 6 times since he's been on the job. I don't know if that is because we had played him a couple of times while he was at SFC and he is somewhat comfortable with us, or if that is just the pattern of the new staff, but I think our uptick in recruiting can definitely be attributed to how these guys are doing things.

I wasn't sure, I just know i've heard them mentioned a lot around thanksgiving time being in the playoffs in the same division as the scottsdale schools (which i think is the second highest division) so wondered if they produce any talent, it also seems a logical place to recruit and make contacts with if you are already in el centro.

DShaw, for a little comparison....The current staff sounds like they are very active and this real good. The last staff never showed up on campus for a three year period? I'm not sure how long you have been there, but did the Craft staff or Tollner staff get out there much on your campus? And just for the hell of it, how many times has UCLA and USC been out there? Just curious.

I have been on campus since 2002. I do not recall ever seeing UCLA on campus. Washington, Washington St., Cal, USC have all made one or more visits. ASU would have been here last year, but let's just say Erickson did not appreciate our hospitality. As for previous Aztec staffs, Crafts is the only one I can remember sending anyone our way.
We sort of feel like part of the Aztec family with the way this staff has interacted with us.

Spoke to the OC back there a couple of weeks ago, and he tells me the kid is hanging tough so far as he gets used to the way they do things at West Point.

They mean nothing until LOI day.
Although Hoke did not seem to be much of a closer so I think it is good that he gets them early.

Technically correct, but I would much rather have early commits than nothing at all. Not sure what you mean by Hoke not being much of a closer; would like some more feedback on that.

Hoke has lost a few big time recruits (one with stage parents and one that seems to have some love of the spotlight) and didn't snag an intelligent guy that wanted to go to Stanford that got accepted at the 11th hour - not sure we can gauge if he is or isn't a closer yet

Agree DShaw...It is a sign that things are going better.....even if a kid changes his mind. They are thinking about us and that changes the perception in the high schools in SoCal.
