I should not do that for sure. I do like a continuing discussion and name calling or inferring a lack of the capacity to reason is not what I like to do or be called out on. I guess I get frustrated when the thread starter clearly points out a fact, like the Swat Team deal on the Stockton story, you claim you did not see it. This thread is more of me not wanting to give in to the idea that some kind of revenue enhancement might be called for if only to reach a compromise. OK I did not offer an opinion on the SWAT Team, because I did not see enough information. Television web page reports are sketchy at best and afan has a longstanding position. I wanted to know why the agency had a swat team, why they might need one, what kind of crime they were responsible for stopping and the basis for their enforcement power, among other things. I will always reserve the right not to offer an opinion when I am not sure about the facts. I seldom weigh into your discussions about California budget issues, for example. Have you ever noticed? I was honestly not sure in this case and I did not feel comfortable expressing an opinion. Our budget issues cannot be discussed with honestly unless we look at income sources. An honest discussion about taxation should not threaten anyone. If conservative leaders refuse to even discuss income they are being disingenuous or they have another agenda. I suspect them of both. Now we are talking and if it takes that much pain to get the people who can really fix this problem to come to some common ground we are up the creek.

And now you go racist as well? Really nice image depiction. Look Win, I read every word you write, unfortunately. My point is that Republicans love to wear the badge of fiscal conservatism, but the reality has historically been that they are the bid spenders, usually on wars and defense industry, just as Eisenhower warned against. The reality is, if you supported George and his two wars, you can hardly paint yourself as a fiscal conservative, can you? A trillion dollars! Obama inherited the biggest financial mess since the Great Depression and you want to run him out of town? I would love to hear your argument as to how the Republicans and Wall street were not complicit in creating this disaster. Nothing racist at all. If you can make that case, it is in your mind only. Of Course Bush and every other President spent too much on the wrong things. It is hard to see how you fail to see that with Obama trumping the big spending exponentially makes the problem near unsolvable unless we are willing to feel some real pain. We agree on something! Everyone needs to take a hircut in this one. I am one of the people that would be affected by tax changes, and Social Security means testing, and I would welcome the opportunity to give something back to the system that benefitted me greatly (like a first class education from SDSU that cost me practically nothing). Let's make sure we don't destroy the one thing that can get us out of the rut and back on the right tract - education at a reasonable cost. Bring on the (financial) pain, something we can all share in.

Wow. Something we can all agree on. If this President has said anything I can agree with, it is "everyone has some skin in the game".
I can take a haircut, too.

It's really rather simple; cut the defense budget by half and cut military retirement so nobody gets retirement benefits until they hit age 55 or, if they saw combat, 45 and put them all on Medicare. Then you cut oil company subsidies, ag subsidies for every corporate owned farm, mortgage interest subsidies for every mortgage over 500 grand and do away with all bull$#!+ ethanol subsidies. Then you add a VAT of 5 cents on every purchase of a buck or more whether it's a yacht or a tube of lipstick.
Of course, the Republicants will never go for any of that because the party is totally owned by corporate America and quite frankly the Democrats aren't much better. But at least the Democrats attempt to close loopholes and raise taxes on the rich a bit.

As far as cutting the military budget in half, why half? Why not by three fourths? I mean if we are going to ignore the world political scene and set our defense budget at an arbitrary percentage of what it is now, then by all means, let’s pick a lower percentage and save even more money. Also, are you saying that we should require 45 year old military retirees to give up their current benefits for ten years until they turn 55 -- despite having planned on those benefits in making their decision to retire? Or are you suggesting that the change should be limited to those who sign up after the new policy is adopted -- in which case, what are the budget savings in toughening the requirements for retirement? I'm thinking that they are not all that great as, in order to offset the resultant decrease in enlistments, we will have to raise the pay. Why is it that liberals only want to cut conservative agenda items while conservatives only want to cut liberal agenda items? Yoda out… .

He has no idea what he is talking about and is just trying to get a rise out of anybody. I think most people who really see the gravity of our current situation will gladly give up some skin. The exceptions would be those who have no "skin in the game" and only want more handouts. DOD is proposing that some fees be increased for us retirees and that other rules are being changed to help with budget problems. I don't mind all that much and hope that it helps.

My first semester at San Diego State "College" in 1962 cost me $75. + books , of course. I was not a motivated kid, but I did take advantage of the fact that a reasonable SAT score and HS GPA could land you at a four year school. Given the difficulty of getting in and the cost associated with a college education today, I may have instead ended up with minimum wage jobs and not much of a future. Affordable higher education is one of the keys to the future success of our economy. It is extrordinarily shortsighted to cut education at any level, but to discourage young people from seeking higher ed is felony stupid. Would anyone out there deny its importance, even if we needed to tax more to get there?

I might add that some degrees are worthless. We need engineers, chemists, math majors and such. Those should have ways for capable motivated kids to get those degrees at a reasonable price. We do not need many Social Science programs. Those should be very expensive and not subsidized at all.

In general, however, I would agree we need more terchnically trained graduates and fewer lawyers. BTW, I was a poli sci major, English minor and ended up getting a graduate degree in administration and and ended up in budgets, human resources and facilities management. So poli sci degree did not dissuade me from a career not apparently related to the subject matter.

The strongest benefit you probably gained was the ability to analyze complex issues and to write in an intelligent fashion. That is usually good enough to land you a management/administrative job.

"The technical majors have something of substance to contribute to real life, and the 'social science' ones just end up sitting around in a faculty lounge discussing how to screw it up."
A college education is only worth its economic value? That is such crap. The conservatives have a real blind spot on this issue. The only value they can see in humans is their economic potential. That sucks.
Had I believed that garbage I would not have bothered to go to college. I have an economically useful degree and one that is not considered to be of economic value. The degree without the economic value prepared me far more effectively for all the promotions I received than the one with the economic value.
But, I did not go to college to validate some conservative a-hole's economic idea of education. I went to college, because the experience and exposure has made my life more fun. And it has.

You miss the point. I think we should encourage technical and science education. That does not mean that Political Science would not have some value. A Nuke trained young man entering the Navy could become the Main Propulsion Officer on a Nuke Sub on his way up the chain of command. A Political Science major might become the Laundry Officer or Assistant First Lieutenant in charge of chipping paint. Both are pretty important, but one guy has a clear path to a successful working career in or out of the Navy. The other might become super successful as an insurance exec or run a Human Resources office in a large company. Both are important, but one takes much more education and experience. It all depends on how you look at things and what you value.

The technical majors have something of substance to contribute to real life, and the 'social science' ones just end up sitting around in a faculty lounge discussing how to screw it up."I did not miss the point. The two responses above are unambiguous in their meaning, Win. One of them is yours, Win. Republicans always want to assign an economic value to everything. If you want economic value, you train. Education has a more intrinsic value, hence the different term. I knew a fairly large number of Naval officers who were engineers. They had much in common with each other. They were usually difficult to deal with and arrogant. But, then again they could tell I was unimpressed by them. It really used to "P" them off that I was civilian. It prevented them from dealing with me in a manner which would satisfy them. ;D I believe that what interests you has a genetic component. For example, medical research has shown that Asperger's sufferers have an extraordinary number of engineers in their close family relations. You cannot possibly know that an engineer is more valuable than a social scientist or writer.
