And James Darnell was left off, due to his lack of extra base hits...which he promptly responded with 2 home runs last night, including a 440 foot bomb to left center. The Padres have at least one player in the top five of the entire minor leagues in the categories of OPS, HR's, RBI's and batting average.

I can only wonder how long before one of them gets called up to the Padres this season. Any type of offense is all the SD needs to get back to winning games.

I saw that this morning. Has to be tempered by the 19 MPH from LF to RF though. I've learned this year to read the weather at the bottom of the box scores. I'd never done that before. I started that today after San Antonio's second game of 20 or more runs in two weeks. I read where Jed Hoyer and staff adjust stats by park for all minor leaguers. I'd love to learn how they do that.

Account for the wind in the road games. Midland is a much more hitter friendly environment than the Wolff, San Antonio's home ballpark. Decker's only hitting .476 there with a couple homers. The Missions can really swing the bat. Fun team to watch.

Last year San Antonio was the worst hitting team (Batting Average) in the Texas League. That was due in part to their ball park which, like Petco Park, is a huge pitchers park. 2010 Texas League Team Hitting Team | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | AVG | OPS | NW Arkansas | 140 | 4697 | 770 | 1368 | 291 | 37 | 132 | 712 | 2129 | 486 | 817 | 152 | 70 | .364 | .453 | .291 | .817 | Midland | 140 | 4719 | 646 | 1247 | 239 | 42 | 74 | 593 | 1792 | 525 | 1022 | 126 | 49 | .341 | .38 | .264 | .721 | Springfield | 140 | 4717 | 721 | 1245 | 248 | 34 | 146 | 660 | 1999 | 544 | 1065 | 78 | 28 | .35 | .424 | .264 | .774 | Frisco | 139 | 4753 | 573 | 1225 | 215 | 41 | 68 | 510 | 1726 | 440 | 977 | 91 | 44 | .324 | .363 | .258 | .687 | Tulsa | 139 | 4619 | 611 | 1182 | 245 | 28 | 105 | 566 | 1798 | 455 | 960 | 104 | 53 | .329 | .389 | .256 | .718 | Corpus Christi | 140 | 4700 | 548 | 1195 | 194 | 31 | 89 | 508 | 1718 | 441 | 1030 | 96 | 55 | .321 | .366 | .254 | .687 | Arkansas | 140 | 4534 | 535 | 1124 | 167 | 36 | 84 | 476 | 1615 | 399 | 952 | 123 | 81 | .313 | .356 | .248 | .669 | San Antonio | 140 | 4695 | 605 | 1150 | 212 | 33 | 93 | 566 | 1707 | 566 | 1006 | 62 | 45 | .331 | .364 | .245 | .694 |
This year The Missions are rocking as the best hitting team in the league, so far. They are leading by a wide margin. 2011 Texas League Team Hitting Team | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | TB | BB | SO | SB | CS | OBP | SLG | AVG | OPS | San Antonio | 16 | 594 | 129 | 201 | 54 | 5 | 32 | 125 | 361 | 76 | 120 | 10 | 6 | .415 | .608 | .338 | 1.023 | NW Arkansas | 14 | 468 | 76 | 130 | 25 | 5 | 15 | 70 | 210 | 56 | 90 | 17 | 5 | .357 | .449 | .278 | .806 | Frisco | 16 | 543 | 75 | 150 | 18 | 5 | 17 | 69 | 229 | 36 | 111 | 14 | 3 | .336 | .422 | .276 | .757 | Tulsa | 16 | 532 | 87 | 141 | 23 | 6 | 20 | 80 | 236 | 56 | 107 | 7 | 6 | .337 | .444 | .265 | .781 | Arkansas | 14 | 451 | 63 | 117 | 24 | 6 | 11 | 59 | 186 | 52 | 119 | 26 | 7 | .337 | .412 | .259 | .75 | Springfield | 16 | 552 | 79 | 143 | 31 | 2 | 16 | 74 | 226 | 66 | 134 | 9 | 2 | .346 | .409 | .259 | .756 | Midland | 16 | 551 | 84 | 140 | 31 | 8 | 18 | 76 | 241 | 74 | 109 | 8 | 3 | .35 | .437 | .254 | .787 | Corpus Christi | 16 | 560 | 79 | 138 | 31 | 2 | 13 | 73 | 212 | 48 | 105 | 28 | 5 | .306 | .379 | .246 | .685 |
A team OPS above 1.000. WOW. They must have stole all the hits the Padres should be getting. They are averaging almost 10 more bases per game than the 2nd best team. It isn't totally where they have been playing since their pitching is 3rd in the league in ERA.

They will get a very stiff test tonight in the form of Martin Perez, one of the top prospects in baseball.

Rizzo hits his seventh long ball of the season. 26 RBI's for him. Anytime, Ron. I'm excited to see some of these farm guys producing. Gives me some hope.

I created the linked spreadsheet below because I was tired of trying to find out information about Padres minor leaguers. Nice, Bill. Thanks for that. The links on the right don't work with a straight double click. Click once and wait for a line to display and click that to display their MiLB page. PM me any errors or omissions. The age on the right is calculated from their Birthdate. So it automatically adds .01 every 3.65 days.

Good news on the farm for the Pads, it has been a long time since they had a full stable of good hitting prospects.

Anthony Rizzo will be the starting first baseman for the Padres next season, Jaff Decker has a chance to be the starting left fielder. Also think Blake Tekotte will be a valuable guy off the bench with the ability to steal bases, hit for average and play excellent defense.

So he is a little old for "AA" but he is rocking after having hit 28 HR and 35 Doubles for LE last year. .290 .330 .719 1.049 His 11 home runs leads The Texas League. 2nd place only has 8 HRs. He is blocked by Rizzo. But at 24 they may promote him before Rizzo if they feel they really need a 1B. He is sure hitting a lot better than Kyle Blanks. Cody has 5 home runs in his last 6 games.

Question for Ryan, Bill or anyone else for that matter. I have been looking at Gyorko's offensive stats and comparing them to other current MLB players from their minor league days.
Do you think a comparision to Longoria (A+ level offensive stats at this point) are comparable? Is Gyorko's bat similiar to Longoria's with continued growth and development? I have no clue to Gyorko's defense, but I wouldn't compare most anybody to Logoria's defense as he's the man at 3B.
I've seen Rincon before and really like him, too. But, Gyorko's bat has me intrigued.

Longoria is a bad comparison to almost anyone. He's probably one of the top 10-20 players in all of baseball. Gyorko has an advanced bat, it's just not in that category (Not many are, so that's not a slight to him)...his defense has been much better than anticipated, but the key for him will be to hit in AA, as is the case with almost everyone in the Cal League. I think between Gyorko, Rincon and Darnell, someone will end up playing third for the Padres not named Chase Headley. Might just be another two seasons though.
