With tons of time left to recruit, we have this on the front line (with a couple of ifs) for 2011... -Bryant Crowder 6-10 -Tim Shelton 6-7 (If knees allow) -Alec Williams 6-5 -Brain Carlwell 6-11 (Slim, slim, chance for a medical year) As I see it, we need two more big men. One needs to be a banging power forward type. It remains to be seen how skilled this cat is, and if he will actually start at PF or C. Not to mention he will only have 2 years of eligibility at SDSU. Cain (6'7) is a strong rebounder and would be a great fit at PF next to Crowder. I believe Cain is also strong/skilled enough to play some minutes at PF/C if needed. I hope we also get 1 more big like 6'11 Caudill, 6'10 Maxey or 6'9 Sequele to play next to Crowder.

We seem to have success recruiting the top JC centers in Cali. Isn't this guy our 3rd or 4th top JC center to come out of Cali?

Very good pickup for Fish.
This is where he doesn't rebuild, he reloads.
Oldie Out

Really impressed by numbers at Say No Classic, not necessarily cause of the defense you will see there but rather you generally only get shots if you can run the floor its more of a guards style league

This is true ... but is this kid going to be like Malcolm Thomas or Jerome Habel? The fact that this kid has bounced around so much worries me ... but he could easily be our starting C for 2 years averaging 25-30 mins per game. Even if we don't get another 2011 recruit we will have Crowder and Shelton at PF/C and Leonard and Williams at PF ... not bad especially because we will have taller, more athletic guards.

Good news, It would be great if this dude's athleticism and running the court is as advertised - we could have a super uptempo team if we get some more running bigs.

I think Kawhi is gone after his soph year. I hope not, but I think so.

This is an interesting pickup. I had a few SMC games this year and watched this player. It was obvious he was talented and better than most players he went against. However, the problem with him is that he "took off" plays a lot of times and would become very disinterested if the ball didn't touch his hands (it is the usual attitude of a JC player).
In conference play, there wasn't a true big man to test Crowder but he had trouble with post players with girth like Fisher (6'6")from Bakersfield. Crowder isn't a post-up player and got most of his points from rebound put backs and fast breaks (he runs the floor extremely well). He is very quick to jump off the floor and block shots well. He is no Malcolm Thomas or Brian Carwell; he is a tall player who likes to be on the wing and goes to the glass from the weakside to get his points off smaller players.

Just a quick question dahoop.....Were you reffing JC ball when Mike Mackell was playing? If so, how do you compare the two?

It's a legit concern but no reason to think he will end up like Habel. There were rumors about Habel's character long before he came to SDSU. We've heard nothing of the sort about this kid . . . at least not yet. (SGF knocks on wood.)

He at least gave us one exciting year, it is too bad it didn't work out for him or us.

Worst case is if Shelton can't come back and Leonard leaves. With those two we will be left with: PG 1. LaBradford Franklin 2. Xavier Thames Wings 3. Chase Tapley 4. Jamaal Franklin 5. James Rahon Bigs 6. Alec Williams 7. Bryant Crowder With 6 (more) spots to fill.

It's good to hear Crowder can block shots. I think this is Thomas' best attribute and replacing it is going to be tough. You have to go all the way back to Joe Mann to find the last great shot blocker before Thomas.

After watching the highlight video, he obviously is athletic and will be a solid rebounder and shot blocker ... but the video also showed that he has great hands and solid footwork .... he also grabbed a few defensive rebounds and dribbled the ball up the court and scored himself (4:20 & 5:10) which shows he has a pretty solid handle.
A few posts ago dahoopref suggested he should be athletic enough to play PF/wing next to a true C/post but his desire is sometimes questionable? Also, he came off the bench for a sub .500 JC team?, although many suggested he was the most talented player in the league.
We definitely need 2 more talented bigs in here to push each other during practice and have them earn their minutes on the floor.

Good hand, decent 10 foot shot/touch, good timing on shot blocking (not great from what I saw, but good), very athletic, and as dahoopref says....really runs the court well for a big man. I have to agree with you on him at forward. I would love to see us pick up another big man center and Crowder could play power forward. That would be ideal. I agree with Bill too. We need at least two more big. In the 6-8 (true 6-8) to 6-11 area. As for Crowder taking plays off? That is where the staff will come in.
