Back in the old Metro League days. Chula Vista, Hilltop, Bonita Vista, Sweetwater, Castle Park. Pick one. They all hated each other. Mar Vista and Marian were the punching bags. They had to close the gym for the Hilltop-Bonita basketball game more than once.

Speaking of Fallbrook, the Warriors have a good coach who seems to know what he's doing. He is Joe Silvey, a Princeton man. It will be interesting to see how the team does this year.
As for Vista, coach Dan Williams has continued the fine record that has characterized Panther football for decades.
Both teams are now in the Avacado East. The other schools are San Pascual, Escondido, and Mission Hills.

Okay we are not in SD County, but we play in SDCIF. The best HS FB rivalry in SDCIF may be Brawley vs Central (El Centro) in the annual Bell Game. This upcoming season will mark the 67th meeting between these two schools in the battle for the Bell. These two communities are about 15 miles apart out here in the Imperial Valley. Now nothing against the Valley, but there is not a lot to do for entertainment here outside of high school sports, so these two communities really get behind their teams. The game is held on the Friday of Cattle Call Weekend in Brawley, so the Valley is packed with people who are in town for the Rodeo, Parade and Parties. The game is also the last weekend of the regular season which usually means that the victor is winning the league title. It is our version of Michigan versus Ohio State. Neither school likes the other. People are putting signs in their yards declaring their allegiances; cars are marked up on the windshields as to who they will be rooting for all week long. Kick-off is at 7:30, but if you are not in the stadium by 5:30, you will have to stand to watch the game. Games at Central are a blast as their is no track around the field and the fans of both schools are right on top of you. It is the only game where communicating with your players on the field is impossible during the games as the noise of both crowds is too great for the players to hear you. The only thing I have seen in SD that might compare is Saints versus Cathedral. Having been apart of this series for about 10 years now, I really feel bad that more HS kids do not get to play in a series like this. Oh, Central has scoreboard right now as we missed 3 extra points and a FG to lose 23-18 this past year...yes I can do the math i would have to agree with dshawn on this one. i went to the bell game when i was living in el centro in 1963 as a kid and its still going today. what a great rivalry!!!

They had to close the gym for the Hilltop-Bonita basketball game more than once. This is true. Being from the south bay myself all these rivalries were pretty good. Going to Sweetwater was a treat since it was located on highland. Bonita always seemed like they were better than the rest since they lived in the "rich" part of chula. Same with eastlake when they opened up.

Grossmont and Helix. Grossmont is the old school. Helix, the second school in the east county, opened in 51. Helix has won in football and basketball consistently the last 3 decades, but Grossmont rules baseball. The football rivalry is dead because they don't play each other consistenly anymore since the Grossmont Conference was split into North and South divisions. They play this year on October 22 but that's the first regular season meeting since 2006. A real shame not keeping this rivalry going despite different conference divisions, but Helix seems fixated on playing the Oceansides, RBV's, and Mira Mesas of the world in non conference every year.

Whipped the sheet out of them most every time we met them in League Play.

When the league split, the Hiller staff didn't want to keep playing Helix even though it is a great rivalry. They did play each other a few years back, in the playoffs. As another post stated, the Grossmont athletic leaders finally got it right, changing from the North & South to the large schools & the smaller schools. Helix still has a sold rivalry with Mt. Miguel, even though the two are no longer in the same league.

When Gordon Wood arrived, he realized that Helix's schedule was pretty easy and wanted to challenge the team, so he scheduled tougher teams. I've been told that Grossmont coaches didn't want to play their next oldest team, and rival. Now, with the new alignment, they will play every year.

North County: no one has mentioned
La Costa Canyon - Torrey Pines or Oceanside - El Camino
going back to the old days in San Diego City metro i would be:
Hoover - San Diego (the oldest) St. Augustine - Univeristy (now called 'Cathedral') Morse - Lincoln
Kearny Komets were a powerhouse in all sports in the old days but I cant recall who their big 'rival' was.
