"Boise State was founded as a junior college and didn’t become a university until 1974. It doesn’t have a reputation that measures up to Utah, which ranked No. 80 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2009. Boise State was not ranked."

It should be noted that's a Schrotenboer article and considering the only thing keeping the MWC from gaining AQ status is the vast underachievement of its weaker football schools, the weakest of which has been SDSU, he had a perfect opportunity to put in a dig at us. Yet he didn't.

Just a thought - I think when you talk about BSU you can include the whole state of Idaho as the TV market (not just the city) and maybe some of the surrounding areas as well. If you add up Boise at 262k and Idaho Falls at 127k and Twin Falls at 65k you get about 454,000 sets. Not nearly as many as Salt Lake but not that bad either. I think the whole state of Idaho connects with BSU (even though the Vandals had a good year last year) BSU is the states team. This is how I would sell this. Plus, you could argue that you can split SLC down the middle and the 950k sets go equally to Utah and BYU so that is 475,000 which is the same as all of Idaho. All you need to do is make sure BYU and Utah play at the same time - so folks in SLC can only watch one game.

As an Idaho native and a guy who's dad, brother and gaggles of other relatives still live there, BSU isn't really "Idaho's team." In the Boise area, absolutely. Perhaps during a BCS bowl game the entire state pulls for the Broncos. But for the rest of the season, not so much. There's a huge rivalry between Southwestern Idaho and Southeastern Idaho for jobs, schools and money. People in Pocatello, Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, don't care much for the folks in Boise. Folks in the northern panhandle are Vandals all the way. Tossed into the mix is BYU. Considering that at least half the residents in Idaho are LDS, the Zoobs have a huge following -- probably even bigger than the combination of UofI, BSU and Idaho St. Furthermore, about 70% of SE Idaho is LDS (90% in some small towns and rural areas). There's Zoob gear everywhere you go in that part of the world.

Utah's football program main reason Pac-10 extended invitation. Pac-10 wanted BYU. Boise State's football program was main reason MWC extended an invitation. Here's the problem with FOOTBALL.
FOOTBALL teams are "up and down" thru the years! No one knows if Boise State or Utah Football teams will continue their rise, as seen over the last few years. What if Boise State has a lousy football team next four years? What if Utah football team is lousy for the next four years?
Bottomline, Pac-10 and other Conferences expansion has a lot more to do with BASKETBALL than FOOTBALL! Yeah, I know Football brings in the bucks, but Basketball, in most cases, gives Colleges their identity. Is UCLA known for football? Heck, no!
There may be a dozen or so Colleges that Football is main identity, such as, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State and etc.. Utah is making a huge mistake by leaving the MWC and going to the PAC 10. In the MWC, Utah Coaches could pencil in at least, a couple of WINS during the season. In the Pac-12, Utah will be the cellar dweller!

It's not so dumb. It's true that expansion is all about football, otherwise the Big 12 South schools wouldn't have wanted to leave Kansas behind.
However, the point about basketball identity is well-taken. Ever hear of Gonzaga or George Mason a few years ago? Didn't think so.
Even though football is driving the shuffle, basketball is going to suffer a lot of consequences.

The good news is it doesn't hurt us in the BCS formula.
